“Come on, we should get a move on.” Kodiak took her hand as he rushed toward the door. “It’s a cool night and the jacket will help with shock.”

“I’m not in shock.”

His gaze ran over her. “No, you’re not. But it’ll also help mask your scent.”

“From vampires?”

“Yeah.”

“What…what about your pack? Will they be mad you have me? Should you ring?”

Kodiak shook his head. “There’s the pack connection, and they’ve felt it too.”

“You communicate with them with your mind?” She followed him out of the hut and stood outside in the dark while he checked that everything was locked and alarmed.

“Yes, but I can block it, and right now I’m too far away from them for the connection to be strong. I have to get back to them.”

Kodiak did everything with a quick, cool calm, but beneath that there was urgency. It throbbed in the air, and she got the feeling he didn’t want her to know. Got the feeling he was trying to keep it under control as he hurried to his car.

And she thought she knew why.

Whatever the mark was, it wasn’t good.

It bothered him way more than he wanted to let on.

She ran to catch up, getting in on the passenger side as he started the engine. He slammed it into reverse and spun the car around before she even thought to put on her seat belt.

She yelped as she was pitched sideways at the sudden movement of the car.

“I love a screamer.” He winked at her as he sped down the track.

He deliberately took the next corner too fast, making her lean towards him. She let out a sharp scream, then laughed.

“And I like fast cars.” The banter was a flirt, but it also helped gloss over the sense of doom hanging over her, and she grabbed the fun tightly.

Tamaska held onto the door, holding her breath as they whipped around the winding, narrow roadway too fast and hit the highway. She quickly put on her seat belt. Based on how fast Kodiak was driving, though, there wouldn't be much chance of surviving a crash.

“You should slow down.” She grimaced.

“Thought you liked fast cars.”

“Changed my mind,” she said, biting her lip as he overtook another car, weaving through the lanes to avoid losing speed.

“We need to get back.”

The light moment was gone.

“I agree, but I prefer to get back in one piece.”

She closed her eyes, wishing the night would end. At least she’d had time with Kodiak, precious time to sort things out between them. She just wanted more time with him.

The strange vibration lingered around her. The more it pervaded her, the more the mark on her arm hurt, but she didn’t want to alarm Kodiak by telling him that. They were already driving too fast.

And…it scared her, which she put down to the whole weirdness of everything. She’d always hated the unknown, preferring to understand the steps from A through to Z. And this was like a crazy series of alien letters she didn’t know how to put in order.

So the mark made her uncomfortable, that’s all. She tried to rub it off, but it was like a tattoo.

Try as she might, she couldn’t stop the questions from coming. Did it mean they could trace her? It did seem as if Cory had known exactly where she’d been inside the club.
