Something sharp surged out from the mark in her arm. Tamaska finally realized why Kodiak was so alarmed.

Amdis was coming for her.

Kodiak

This went farbeyond their bond.

That need to protect her wasn’t just about keeping a human safe. It wasn’t about protecting the woman he was falling for.

This could have dire consequences far beyond the immediate. Consequences he didn’t understand yet.

And even if it wasn’t end-of-the-world level of problems, the fact that she’d been marked was big.

Huge.

She’d been marked by the head of the vampires.

And he had to stop them from getting her whatever the reasons she’d been chosen, marked. No matter what.

If only the car he’d lovingly restored could go faster. For both of their sakes, he needed to be with the pack. He’d risk Olcan’s fury. He’d risk anything.

Would he really kick me out of the pack for bringing her?

Kodiak’s chest tightened. He needed to get his thoughts in order and provide a damn good argument.

It wasn’t just because she was a human and they’d bonded—if it was just that, then risking Olcan’s fury and being potentially kicked from the pack would bring on his challenge for leader; or he’d go his own way. No, this had to do with the vampires and Amdis wanting her.

Making the challenge right now would be dangerous. Being kicked out would be dangerous for all.

Was that why the vampires chose her? As a way to destroy the shifters?

He needed to know all he could about this Blood Opal and its meaning.

And he needed to keep Tamaska safe, no matter the cost.

“I’m worried,” she said.

He cast her a brief look. “It’ll be okay. They won’t hurt you.”

She took a shaky breath. “No, I meant…I meant what if they won’t help—”

“We’re duty bound as shifters to keep humans safe from vampires, to stop them taking too much power, and that goes together.”

“What if I put your friends in danger?”

His hands tightened on the wheel. “No more than vampires already represent to us.”

A lie, the truth? It didn’t matter. Nothing did except her safety.

Fuck, it didn’t help that he couldn’t hide his feelings or the connection between Tamaska and himself.

Kodiak’s packmates had already been suspicious, but now they would know for sure. They’d detect the bond, which would be a dead giveaway when the pack sensed that the pair had recently had sex.

Which wouldn’t matter as much if this was merely about him and her. Not the fucking Blood Opal.

Kodiak gripped the steering wheel as he overtook a slow driver.
