“You’re not going to slow down, are you?” asked Tamaska.

“We have to get to the clubhouse. You’ll be safer there.”

“Because I’m marked?”

Kodiak nodded, staying focused on driving, keeping his features as neutral as he could.

“But there’s a problem with me going to the clubhouse, isn’t there?” she asked. “That’s why there’s an underlying urgency in you. And it’s not about the opal or the vampires. Is it?”

Fuck, how is she so perceptive? He didn’t want to lie to her, didn’t want to say things might not be as straightforward as he’d made them sound.

What if she took off? Tamaska was that type. She didn’t run and hide, but she’d be stupid enough in her strength to think she could smooth over things for him and somehow keep herself safe.

And then…

His wolf pushed to the surface fast and hard, furious at where Kodiak’s thoughts were heading. With a deep breath and concentrated effort, he maintained control of his inner beast, not allowing it to escape.

Kodiak understood loud and clear why his wolf was angry. Olcan wasn’t going to show any understanding upon seeing a human in the clubhouse, no matter the reasons. Still he was damn well going to try.

“What are you thinking about?” asked Tamaska.

“Nothing.” Kodiak kept his grip tight on the steering wheel to steady it as he pushed harder on the accelerator. The car couldn’t go any faster.

“You’re thinking. I can tell,” Tamaska said. “And whatever it is, it’s bad.”

Her gaze burned into him, but he refused to look at her. He had to stay focused. Otherwise, at such a high speed, he could end up crashing into a tree and killing them both.

Tamaska sighed, then leaned over and, to Kodiak’s horror, turned on the radio. A static buzz screeched, hurting his ears as she tried to tune it to a station.

Kodiak slapped her hand away from the radio. “Don’t touch my car.”

“Tetchy,” she said.

“My car, my rules. The radio stays off.”

“Then you can talk. There’s a lot I need to know, and this is as good of a time as any.”

This wasn’t how these things went. Usually it would be a gentle exploration, a slow road to allow someone to accept his world. At least, that’s what he’d heard through various channels about the progressive packs who accepted humans joining.

There weren’t many of them, and most kept that information to themselves for good reason. But a lot were for moving with the times and making sure lines and their way of life didn’t die out.

Keeping bloodlines pure could only work to a point.

He sighed. Kodiak wasn’t ready to tell her about the world she’d entered by bonding with him, by becoming the vampires’ prey. But she was already being forced to learn quickly as things continued to unfold at a rapid pace.

“Knowledge is power,” she said, her words penetrating his thoughts. “And right now I need as much of that as possible.”

She had a point. Right now, she was pretty much in the dark about the secret supernaturals that lived among humans. The best thing he could do was tell her everything and hope it would help her prepare for whatever came next.

“Fine, then,” he said. “What do you want to know?”

“How long have wolves been in here in Australia? I mean, it’s not the sort of animal native to the region.”

“We came in the early 1800s, following the vampires who had decided to try living somewhere warmer and wilder.”

“You’re serious, then? Your job is to protect others from vampires?”

“Yes.”
