Tamaska was direct, that was for sure. He liked that about her, but not at the moment. He was aware how tenuous their connection was. If he lied to her and she found out, it could damage their relationship. He didn’t want that. But there was too much at stake. He had to keep information from her to protect himself and his pack.

“It’s complicated,” he finally answered.

“I need to know.”

Damn his wolf for revealing his true feelings to Tamaska. He would have to tell her. His wolf had a good reason to disapprove of Kodiak’s actions. Returning to the pack was the right choice for him, but not for Tamaska.

And it was the only one he had. Anything else would mean her demise.

“We have a pack leader, the alpha. And Olcan’s set in his ways, the old ways. He—” Getting into the politics weren’t going to help. “He has power. And Olcan has forbidden me to be with you.”

“But you’re with me now.”

“And I could be kicked out of the pack for it.” He sucked in a breath. “But that doesn’t matter. He’s not going to turn down a human in need.”

“No, just punish you after.”

“It—” He stopped. It was like that. So he changed his direction. “It doesn’t matter what he does. I’m what’s known as a lone wolf.”

One who’d been with a pack a long time. He liked going off on his own, but being cut off and choosing isolation were two different things.

“It’s going to be okay, Tamaska.”

She remained quiet. He kept his foot pressed against the gas pedal, hands tight on the steering wheel, and eyes on the road. Maybe that was enough information, and the questions would stop.

“Isn’t living with a pack sort of important for you, like for ordinary wolves?” asked Tamaska.

“Yes.” He shrugged. “But as I said, lone wolf.”

She made a soft sound, like a scoff. “You’d risk that just to be with me? Or is there something else?”

Kodiak realized now why she’d been so quiet. Tamaska had been thinking hard and making all kinds of connections.

“Yes,” he said quietly. “And not just because I’m attracted to you. My wolf side intensifies the connection with you.” And it would harm him to ignore it. He breathed out heavily. “I took a chance to be with you because it was the right thing to do. I wanted to protect you from the vampires, which you don’t know much about.”

“I’m a burden?”

“No, I didn’t say that. Just that the vampires are dangerous, and I don’t want you floundering in the dark.”

“I’m learning fast. They want me dead.”

“They want your blood, specifically,” Kodiak corrected without thinking.

“Ick. I don’t know how they drink it.” She shivered with disgust.

His heart slammed against his ribs. Was there something special about her blood? The thought had flitted in his head before, but she was human. There was nothing special about human blood, other than the fact that vampires drank it.

Or maybe Tamaska was different.

Maybe that’s why they wanted her; why he had bonded so easily to her. He needed to ask Ash about her blood to find out more.

“I’m here to keep you safe, Tamaska.”

“But you’ve done more than simply keep me safe.” Her voice softened. “You’ve slept with me…more than once.”

Heat flushed through Kodiak. The hot sex they’d been having was off-the-charts good and only got better. He couldn’t deny that it might have been lust initially, but it was changing into something so much more.

However, now wasn’t the time to explore that arena. Not when the vampires wanted her. Then again, maybe it was the time. Who knew what would happen in the future?
