“So, it was just fucking, then?” she asked with a huff.

Torn between his pack and the woman he was falling in love with, Kodiak took his foot off the gas. He needed time to answer her.

The car slowed below the speed limit, and he placed his hand on her knee. He glanced at her, eyes locking with hers.

“No, it was more than that. If all this other stuff with the Blood Opal and the vampires wasn’t happening now, it would be easier to focus on you, on us, on explaining my world.”

“If ii hadn’t been for the Blood Opal and the vampires, I wouldn’t have met you,” she said.

“Yeah. They didn’t count on us forming such a strong connection.” He winked at her, trying to lighten the situation. “They’d better watch out.”

Tamaska smiled, but it didn’t quite reach her eyes. “Yeah, they’d better.”

Kodiak squeezed her knee, then returned his hand to the steering wheel and sped up.

“So, when we get to this clubhouse,” she started hesitantly. “What’s going to happen?”

“You’ll be fine. No one will hurt you.”

“Then why is your wolf unhappy?”

Kodiak felt his wolf growl at him under the surface. “Because he doesn’t want me to risk getting kicked out of the pack by taking you there.”

“I thought you said you were a lone wolf.”

“I am, but even lone wolves have packs, and—”

“Then don’t take me to the clubhouse.”

Kodiak shook his head. “It’s the safest place for you to be.”

“But the consequences aren’t worth it.”

“You’re worth it,” he said. “And I won’t hear anything else about it. This is my decision.”

“You could take me back to the hut,” she said. “Then your wolf won’t be cross with you, and your pack won’t know about me.”

“It’s too late.”

Tamaska drew in an audible breath. “Too late? They know about me? No wonder you’re… Kodiak, lone wolf or not, you need these people. And I’m just making it worse. Me and my…phobia of dogs. So, drop me off. I’ll get an Uber home. I’ll pack my bags and get a flight.”

“And where will you go?”

“I don’t know.”

“And I don’t believe you. You don’t give up on things, and you’re not about to give up on this dangerous Blood Opal.”

“Drop me off.”

“Fuck, no way.” She really didn’t understand the danger she was in. Sure, his pack would be annoyed if he brought her to them, but she was still safer there than anywhere else.

“Kodiak, please listen to me.” The way she said his name melted his heart. “We have time to not mess things up with your pack.”

“By me just dumping you somewhere?” He shook his head. “Even if I was that sort of guy, it won’t work, Tamaska. Because no matter if you’re with me or not, they’ll smell you on me. They’ll know.”

Kodiak stopped short of mentioning the bonding process. He didn’t want to scare her by telling her she would be stuck with him for the rest of her life. Things with them were new and even without the threat looming, it wasn’t territory he had experience with, especially with a human, and this should be taken slow, not whatever speed things seemed to be happening in.

“Oh,” she whispered. “Oh.”
