“You always have a choice.”

“It’s because of her, isn’t it?” asked Olcan, eyes glittering.

“If you mean her as in Tamaska, then yes.”

“You were told to stay away from her for very good reason.” Olcan raised his voice.

“The vampires were attacking her. They want her because of the Blood Opal, you know that, and it was stupid to think I wouldn’t protect her. It’s what we do, protect humans from vampires.”

“You do what I say.”

“I’m doing the right thing, protecting a human that’s been marked by the vampires because of the opal. We know they’re up to something.”

“I couldn’t contact you.”

“I had to so I could work out the best path to take. And I came back. I’m here because I want to be here, I need to be here, with my pack, fighting the vampires.”

Olcan’s eyes narrowed. “I see.”

“We don’t need to fight each other. We have to deal with the vampires first.”

“But you’ve gone against my word.” Olcan shook his head. “And you’ve bonded with her, a human. It’s against the pack law.”

“You know we don’t always have a choice over who we bond with. It happens on a deeper level; one we can’t control.”

“You can never be with her because she’s human. You’ve chosen her over the pack.”

“I have not. I’m here. I’ve chosen the pack and I’ve chosen her.” Kodiak looked at his alpha.

Olcan shook his head once more. “It won’t work out well for either of you. You can’t have us and her. A time will come and you must choose.”

Kodiak let out a low growl. Frustration burned through his body while his wolf pushed hard to be let free. Any second now and he would lose control.

He knew he could have both Tamaska and his pack. There was no way he would choose one over the other. He had to make them see it his way.

Tamaska

Tamaska shifted uncomfortablyin the car as she stared at the spot where Kodiak had disappeared to.

What’s taking him so long?

It felt like an eternity since he’d left her. The stay-put order didn’t sit well at all. She didn’t take kindly to orders and sitting here—apart from the demand aspect—seemed to court fate.

Like she was bait for the vampires.

Her fingers itched to open the door and get out.

And do what? Storm up to the entrance?

He wanted to check things were good with his pack, yes, but the bottom line was he had her waiting to make sure the vampires weren’t there.

A series of images played out in her mind. People drinking blood, Cory’s fangs, Kodiak’s wolf fighting, the altar, blood on her hands, more fighting.

Him hurt…or worse.

All because of her, because of the opal, and…God…what if it had been an ambush?
