“I’m here now so tell me,” said Kodiak. Then he smelt it. He’d been too distracted with Tamaska, to have detected the scent he hated most in the world.

“Things are heating up with the vampires,” said Shota.

“How?” Kodiak asked the question, even though he wasn’t looking forward to the answer. The reason was sitting in his car, waiting to for an all-clear so she’d know it was safe to come inside. He needed to go to her. It was too dangerous to have Tamaska sitting outside if the vampires were coming for her.

“A few tried to come in. We’ve fought them off so far.”

Kodiak shook his head. “Fuckers. Let them come. I’ll tear them apart.”

“Steady now, Kodiak,” said Olcan calmly as he came into the side room, which was normally used for training. “You’re out of the loop.”

Kodiak narrowed his eyes at his alpha. He didn’t like the insinuation that he didn’t know what was going on. It had only been a few hours since he’d taken Tamaska to the hut. He’d bet that he knew more about the vampires’ motives than his pack.

Maybe not everything to do with the opal or that ritual. But why they’d come here. He could take an educated guess at that.

And that guess was sitting in his car, waiting for him.

They wanted her.

They’d stop at nothing.

And that meant she needed to be protected. At all costs.

That and no doubt they were seeking revenge for the vampires he’d killed.

“I’m here to help,” he said.

“About fucking time.” Olcan folded his arms over his chest and looked at Kodiak. “Based on the smell of you, it might be too late.”

“What do you mean?” Kodiak asked.

“You’ve been with the human.”

Kodiak clamped his jaw shut. He was going to have to admit that she was outside, in his car. If the vampires were already attacking the clubhouse, then he needed to get her inside, where he could protect her.

Fuck, she was right. She may well have been safer at the hut.

“We’ve been looking for you. You kept the connection out for hours, and now you turn up smelling of a mate. You were out following your dick instead of being here for your pack.” Olcan’s voice rose in anger.

“That’s not true. I had to protect her.” Kodiak tried to keep the situation from escalating.

“No, you didn’t. We can’t protect her and stay strong as a pack. You’re choosing her over your pack.”

Kodiak’s chest tightened, and it became harder to breathe. It had come to this.

“You need all the numbers you can get, and I’m one of the best fighters here. I’ve been killing vampires all night. Plus, Tamaska is the key to the vampire attacks.”

“You’ve been doing what?” Olcan stepped forward, puffing out his chest.

Kodiak squared his shoulders.

“You heard me.”

“Why?” growled Olcan.

Fuck. Kodiak made sure to maintain eye contact with Olcan. This wasn’t how he’d hoped the conversation would pan out.

“I had no choice.”
