It was a tendril of cold down her spine.

“No,” answered Kodiak.

She opened her mouth to protest when Kodiak spun. For a moment she thought the savage light in his eyes, the anger of his wolf she somehow glimpsed there, was because he mistook her for an invader, and wanted to attack.

But that wasn’t it.

“You can’t give up your pack for me, Kodiak,” she said.

Their gazes connected, and though some of that savage light dissipated, some stayed.

He was angry? At her?

“What the fuck, Tamaska?”

“Can’t even control a human,” someone said with a snort.

But the zing of the connection held them both there. Her heart skipped and danced, and she couldn’t control the excitement of connecting with him again.

A thin veneer of civilized anger took over his expression.

“I told you to stay in the car,” said Kodiak.

Her mouth moved but no words came.

“You fucking brought her here?” said the man closest to Kodiak as he signaled to the other.

It all happened way too fast for her to react. Someone had hold of her, the other, younger man. His body radiated heat, and he was pure strength and muscle like Kodiak, yet she felt nothing but anger towards him as he held her tight in a punishing, bruising grip.

“Let me go.” Tamaska struggled against his hold.

Kodiak growled low and menacing and, though it wasn’t aimed at her, the sound gave her shills. She wanted to run to him, take him in her arms.

“I’ll get rid of her.” The man’s grip tightened, and she winced.

Kodiak growled again. “Shota, let her go or I’ll rip your head off, you fucking piece of shit!”

His tone was cold, furious, but there was something in his gaze, something…

Tamaska’s breath accelerated. The memory of her childhood dog attack began to fog her mind.

It’s okay, it’s okay, she told herself, trying to control her breathing, trying to keep her feet firm on the ground and her thoughts in reason and reality.

The look in the man’s eyes wasn’t that of a wild beast, or someone who hated her and wanted her dead.

This was different.

Something weird.

Like he tried to work out who and what she was. Like he was taking stock of her, preparing a report.

The ghost of a smile flitted over his mouth.

“Get away from her, Olcan.”

“Really?” The man named Olcan didn’t move, didn’t smile again, but he nodded, and it was so subtle she wasn’t sure anyone else had seen. Wasn’t sure if anyone else was meant to.

“Leave her alone. Your issue is with me.” Kodiak stepped forward and put a hand on the man’s shoulder.
