“You’re out of line, Kodiak.”

Kodiak’s hand formed a fist.

Olcan glared at at Kodiak. “Want to hit me?”

“Of course I do,” Kodiak’s fist unfurled. “You have Shota putting hands on someone I care about. A human. We don’t do that.”

Suddenly she got why he’d stepped down; this Olcan was the alpha.

Whatever game Kodiak played, it was one that he held close to his chest. This wasn’t just about strength, but intelligence, finding the right way forward. And she…she’d made things worse.

“I’ll go.”

“No.” The snap of the word came from both Kodiak and Olcan.

And so she stood there, arms hurting from the pressure of this Shota’s grip.

Kodiak flicked a glance at the younger man. “You don’t need to hold her so tightly.”

There was warning and space in those words. Like he was giving this man a choice.

Then Kodiak locked eyes with the man behind her.

The man’s grip didn’t loosen for a beat, two, until finally it did, and she got the feeling there had been a battle of wills between Shota and Kodiak, and Kodiak had won.

And all through it was the alpha, still close to her, unmoving, observing.

Olcan held up a hand. “Let me see for myself what makes her so special.”

“You hurt a hair on her head, Olcan, and I’ll make you pay.”

“Shut up, or I’ll kick your ass out myself. The time for you to choose is over.”

Tamaska shivered as the men growled at each other.

I should’ve stayed in the car.

“Don’t. Don’t put him in that position.” She forced herself to meet Olcan’s gaze.

“He’s not at fault. I am.”

“He needs a woman—a human woman—to defend him,” said Shota, making it all sound disgusting.

“Shut your mouth, too,” said Olcan lifting a fist at Shota.

Shota’s eyes narrowed. “Why should I listen to you? He made his bed—”

“He’s trying to keep your pack together. He’s trying to stop the vampires from taking over–or whatever they’re doing–and he’s also trying to respect you. He’d never have brought me here unless it was the only way,” said Tamaska defending Kodiak.

The man holding her started laughing.

Kodiak growled low. “I don’t need you defending me.”

“Should I leave then,” said Tamaska.

“Whatareyou doing here?” Kodiak looked at her with fury, like she’d betrayed him by not obeying his instructions.

And her own anger stirred. She wanted to make things right. She hadn’t asked for any of this, but she kept her mouth shut as she dropped her gaze from his.
