If it came down to her alive and safe and free of the vampires, if he had some magic button to push where that was guaranteed but he’d never see her again, he’d push it in a heartbeat.

He’d rather face that destructive, unbearable loss than have her face whatever it was the vampires had planned for her.

“Quiet, Shota,” said Olcan, who glanced at Tamaska and then at Kodiak. “How do we find that out? We’re being targeted too.”

For a moment he wanted to lie, but he couldn’t. “I don’t think we are. I might be wrong, but I don’t think we were their target. I think Tamaska was. And, still is.”

“So—”

“They smelled me on her. They saw us together. Her co-worker is now a vampire, so it’s easy enough to see how we might be the stepping stone to get to the real target.”

Shota stalked up to him but didn’t quite dare to put a finger on him. “Then you both should go.”

This time Olcan turned on Shota with a loud growl. “Did you suddenly become the alpha?”

Shota’s gaze immediately shifted away.

Olcan met Kodiak’s eyes. “Or it’s a happy coincidence. We need a way to find out.”

“We could use me to find out more about the vampires.”

He stared at Tamaska. “You want me to use you as bait?”

“There has to be a way for me to help. I don’t want to be responsible for someone here getting hurt.”

“You won’t be. No matter what happens. This isn’t your fault. How the fuck were you meant to know what this opal is.” Or them, either. But they as supernaturals should have had an inkling. Unless… An idea began to form in Kodiak’s mind. He put his hand on her shoulder and looked at his alpha.

“Olcan,” he said. “This opal might only unleash its powers when unlocked in some way.”

“And you think she’s the key?”

“I think if we do this right, we can find out.”

“Go on,” said Olcan, folding his arms over his chest. The stormy expression on his face remained.

Shota moved to close rank behind his alpha, making it clear where his allegiance lay.

It wasn’t a smart thing. Olcan had made it more than clear they weren’t battling amongst themselves, and right now, they had to all be one cohesive group without little offshoots of power grabbing.

He ignored the younger shifter. “We can capture one of them, get them to talk.”

Olcan shook his head. “Too risky. Vampires don’t talk easily.”

“Maybe Ash found something?” Kodiak refused to give up. There had to be a way, something they were missing.

And while they hadn’t been asked to leave, they hadn’t been asked to stay. But he meant what he said about Olcan.

His relationship with the alpha might be complex and difficult, an intricate world of balancing on ropes instead of the ground, but Olcan wasn’t about to kick him out.

The man wanted something, but he didn’t know what.

“We don’t have time for research.” Olcan shrugged. “And if we were going to find something, we’d have it already.”

“So we just give up on research all together.”

“Do it all,” Tamaska said.

The three of them looked at her.
