“Research, patrol, ready for the fight. I don’t know much about the opal other than it’s priceless, but maybe I know something without realizing it.”

Damn, his heart squeezed tight. You wouldn’t think she had a phobia right now. And of all the weirdest things he’d ever seen was Olcan, nodding at her words.

“If Tamaska is with us, the vampires will come. We can set a trap, learn more about their motives, and get closer to finding the Blood Opal.” He tapped his foot on the floor, the only outlet he had for his wolf. “And while we do that, we do like she said, research. And we can get in there, have Ash ask her questions. Something will turn up, one way or the other.”

Olcan ran a hand through his hair. “Okay, she stays. But if we fight, and if she can’t do what she’s told, then she’s out.”

“She has a name,” said Kodiak. Tamaska began to relax a little, her pulse slowing and returning to normal as he slid his hand along the back of her neck and curled his fingers to hold her there.

A loose hold, but a hold, a statement. She was his.

“Once we’ve gotten the vampires off our backs, then we can revisit whatever the fuck this is between you two and how it affects the pack.” Olcan moved his hand between the two of them to emphasize his point.

Kodiak exhaled slowly. Things were looking up for Tamaska. If the pack took her in, at least until this was over, then she’d be safe. And beyond that… It sounded like things might have room to move.

“Don’t relax too much,” warned Olcan, pointing at Kodiak.

Kodiak raised a brow. “I’m not planning on kicking back and relaxing.”

“Good. If you don’t pull your weight, or if you get distracted by her, you’re out. If anything goes wrong, then I’ll blame you and kick you out, never to be seen again.”

“I keep my word, Olcan. And I pull my weight.”

“Will I be safe here?” Tamaska turned to look at Olcan. “Will your pack hurt me?”

Kodiak’s heart thudded hard. Things inside him hurt. Asking fucking Olcan for the promise of protection…

He got it, she had to. He was the alpha. And an unknown to her. An unknown who could turn into a wolf.

“No, we won’t hurt you. You are under our protection, as is our duty,” Olcan said solemnly.

“You promise?”

“I do. There are two here as my witnesses. You have the pack’s protection for as long as you’re under threat.”

“Not after?”

“Let’s get through the vampire threat first.”

Tamaska rolled her lips in thought, as if she couldn’t decide whether or not to stay.

Was her fear of dogs holding her back? If only Kodiak had the time to reassure her. The vampires were making life dangerous for them all, but especially for her.

“I’ll stay.”

Kodiak exhaled slowly, the pain in his heart easing. The other bridge, well, they’d cross that if and when they survived.

All he needed now was to set a trap for the vampires and deal with them once and for all.

Kodiak

Her gaze burned into him,a beacon, one he had to ignore if they were to survive this.

For now he was the beta, Olcan’s second.

After all this was over and if they survived, then who the fuck knew? But a beta was a leader, someone who needed to stand with his alpha.
