Kodiak took them in. “Enough. We don’t have time for games.”

The other team members came into the room. As soon as they saw Tamaska, Kodiak held up his hand.

“We’ve got a problem,” said Kodiak.

“I guessed as much,” said Onai, nodding towards Tamaska.

“Tamaska needs our help. She’s been marked by the vampires.”

“You didn’t mention that before,” said Ash as she finished typing on the computer. She closed her laptop with a sharp snap.

Kodiak sighed as his frustration threatened to boil over. But he held on to his control. “There’s a lot to catch up on, and no time. We need to set a trap for the vampires.”

“Why? Because they’re attacking us?”

“Yeah, and because of the human,” Onai said. “They want her, don’t they? It’s not just about the Blood Opal. You’ve brought the danger straight into our home, Kodiak.”

“Olcan has sanctioned it,” said Kodiak, frowning at Onai.

“That’s right, I have.” Olcan had slipped into the room. He met Kodiak’s gaze. “For now.”

Kodiak took in the faces in front of him. “You guys need to focus. The rest of the pack will be here soon.”

“I have a trap planned, but we’re open to suggestions.” Olcan’s voice rang out in the room. “Anyone?”

“We’ll take out the vampires when they come,” said Channing.

Kodiak clenched his fists, trying to keep his temper from exploding. He took a deep breath to calm himself.

“Sounds like a plan,” said Olcan with a smug expression. The rest of the pack entered the room behind him.

“Olcan, tell them your—”

Kodiak didn’t get to say more before the sirens blared in warning.

The unwanted guests had arrived.

Tamaska

“Fuck.”Kodiak’s heat radiated around her as he moved closer. He looked around, the alarms still blaring. “What the hell?”

“Who is it?” asked the alpha.

Tamaska’s skin prickled as people moved, like they’d practiced for something like this. Cogs in a seemingly chaotic but oiled machine.

She grabbed Kodiak’s arm, her voice pitched low. “What did your alpha asked.”

But she didn’t need an answer, she already knew. It pulsated in her, radiating pricks of fire under her skin from the mark.

The vampires.

Ash quickly opened her laptop, then pressed a few keys as Olcan moved to peer over her shoulder.

“Who do you think?” Kodiak asked.

Everything about him was coiled tight, vibrating like he was ready to leap into action.
