Like he was ready to change forms.

She shuddered, not wanting to lose her hard-won control in this place.

“If I can,” he said, turning to her, “I’ll get you out of here.”

“You said that wasn’t safe.” Her legs started to shake.

She wanted to go, run, be back at that hut with Kodiak, anywhere at all. She wanted to pretend none of this was happening, that they were normal people and nothing like supernaturals existed.

But she didn’t run from things, not when it counted, and she wasn’t going to start now.

Sure, she’d love to run and grab her breath and have a better hold on her control, but this was as good as it got right now. And where else would be safer than with Kodiak?

Because Tamaska knew if he got her out of there, he’d be back, fighting.

“That was because we were going to set the trap, prep properly. You can’t be here.”

“And where am I going to go? They marked me. And….” She swallowed and looked up at him. “I’m not leaving without you, and you won’t be coming with me.”

“Tamaska.”

“Will you?”

“I need to stay here, fight, protect you and this place. Ash—”

“Then we’ll both be in danger.”

He closed his eyes for a moment. “Fuck.”

One of the others asked him something and she let him go, giving him a slight push to signal she was okay.”

With a nod so brief she might have missed it if she wasn’t so in tune with him, he turned to the other pack member and they talked fast.

She rubbed her arms. How could the hunt for the Blood Opal have come to this?

“Ash, are you seeing anything?” asked Olcan, peering closer at the screen as Tamaska edged near them, trying to keep out of the way of others.

“Wait, I’m just changing the security camera settings.” Ash’s focus remained firmly on the screen.

“There’s been a breach in the eastern and western boundaries.” Ash looked up, gaze catching Tamaska as she looked at the alpha. “I can’t see them, but it must be vampires. I don’t know what they’ve done to stay hidden.”

Tamaska rubbed her arm where the crescent moon mark was.

Both Olcan and Ash saw her motion but didn’t say a word.

“Fuckers. Let’s go get them,” Shota said as he pushed his way between the pack members.

Olcan glared at him. “We need to stay calm.”

Tamaska glanced around the busy room. Not one of the pack members had shied away from the threat. No one panicked. They vibrated with confidence, strength, and a sense of unity, which impressed Tamaska.

Kodiak finished his conversation and came back, his eyes on her.

“You okay? You’re in safe hands.”

“I can see that.”

“But,” he said, voice barely above a whisper, “are you good?”
