She found a smile, and though it was weak and crumbly, she put it on. “I’m not going to break.”

“Your…issues—”

“Go do your thing.” It cost her a lot to say that. “I’m good. I don’t think anyone’s about to hurt me. At least not amongst your people.”

For a moment she thought he was going to argue, but he nodded tightly. “They won’t. I’m just concerned about you.”

“I’m good.”

“How’s it looking?” asked Olcan.

“It’s not looking good.” Ash grimaced at the computer.

Tamaska slid around to see. The shifter clicked rapidly between camera views, and she was unable to take her eyes off the screen. Even though fear pumped in her veins—no matter what she told herself or Kodiak—she needed to see what was happening. She needed to be prepared.

I’ve fought off vampires before. I can do it again.

“Can we get her out? We can’t fight and protect her at once,” said Olcan.

“It’s too risky. She has to stay,” said Kodiak after a brief glance at the screen.

“I can help.”

Suddenly people looked at Tamaska.

“You don’t do a thing unless you have to. We’re strong like the vampires,” Kodiak said. “And you…”

He didn’t need to finish.

“I vote to kick Kodiak’s little human out. It’s too risky for us having her here,” said Shota, punching a fist hard into his opposite hand.

Kodiak went completely still.

Olcan shook his head. “We can handle it. The human is here under our protection. They’re after her, but there’s more going on.”

“Thanks to Kodiak,” grumbled Shota.

Olcan spoke. “Not necessarily. It seems the vampires have decided that now is a good time to fight.”

Kodiak relaxed a little, almost like he’d stepped back from a precipice. “We were born to fight. More than them. And we—"

“There’s a breach now on the north side.” Ash briefly lifted her eyes from the screen.

“Fuck,” said Olcan. “They’re dividing us.”

“Basic attack, then,” said Shota.

“Nothing is basic about the vampires right now. We’ve trained you better than that,” Kodiak said.

Low key and deadly, anger emanated from Kodiak.

“So what do we do?” Shota crossed his arms.

“Think before we act. If we go into this, like wild things, we’re going to lose.” Kodiak turned to Olcan. “Level four?”

“Agreed.” Olcan nodded. “We carry out that plan until we can’t. And we need to get one alive if we can.”

She shivered.
