“Hey.” She looked at Kodiak who’d come over. “You okay?”

“I think I need a weapon.”

“I’m not about to let you go out there.”

“Ash, you go to the cellar with Tamaska,” said Olcan.

Tamaska couldn’t believe he was finally using her name. Progress came at the weirdest times. She looked at him. “I can fight.”

“No,” Kodiak said.

“Agreed.” Olcan pointed behind her. “Take Tamaska now.”

“I want to fight, boss,” Ash said.

“I need your eyes on the computer. Watch us and feed us information. Keep trying to see where the vampires are, then let us know.”

Ash rolled her eyes and huffed in protest, but quickly returned her attention to the computer screen as she stood.

“There are weapons down there,” Kodiak said to her. “Find one you’re comfortable with and don’t be afraid to use it.”

“Kodiak.” She stopped, hesitated. “Don’t go.”

“I have to.”

She closed her eyes. “I know. I’m being selfish. I’ll be fine with Ash,” said Tamaska.

“Are we finished writing poetry to each other?” Olcan raised his eyebrow.

“Olcan.” Kodiak growled, but he turned to her and said, “He’s right. I have to go. Be safe.”

“I will, Kodiak. I’ll be fine. Go, do what you have to do, and come back to me quickly,” Tamaska whispered.

She moved so she could look into his eyes. As soon as she did, she wished they were alone, that they had all the time in the world to get to know each other slowly, carefully, and passionately, like they had managed to do for a short time in the hut. She wanted that again and again.

She stared into his eyes, and she could see a world, a future, and promises there. Promises that may never come to play. But if they did, she knew that she’d be able to accept him for who he was and what he became. The connection between them was only getting stronger. All she needed was precious time they didn’t have.

Tamaska rose onto her toes and kissed him softly. Then she pulled away.

“I’ll be fine, you’ll be fine, and we’ll see each other soon,” she said.

“We will.” He nuzzled his nose against hers for the briefest moment, then moved away.

Tamaska ignored the urge to follow him and instead let him go, trusting that she would see him again, alive.

“I can see why Kodiak has bonded with you.” Olcan spoke quietly.

There was that word again, bonded. It didn’t make sense. The way the wolves spoke about it made her think the word wasn’t a simple replacement forlove.

“Stay alert, do what Ash tells you, and we’ll talk later.” Olcan strode towards the door.

“There’s movement behind the clubhouse, in the bushlands,” said Ash. The urgency in her voice sent a shiver down Tamaska’s spine.

“Fuck.” Olcan turned, ready to run. “Get her to safety, Ash.”

“Come on.” Ash closed the computer and grabbed Tamaska’s hand. “This way.”

They didn’t even get to the door before the sound of fighting made them pause. Ash stood in front of Tamaska, preventing her from seeing beyond the doorway.
