Kodiak had only just left her. The echoes of grunts and growls made acid burn in Tamaska’s stomach, panic building.

Someone cried out.

“Kodiak!”

24

Kodiak

Inside the clubhouse,Tamaska screamed out his name as another wolf cried out.

He was alone, Olcan already having raced ahead, near the entrance to the main part of the clubhouse but right outside it. This small, wide yard was essentially like being inside. Their grounds spread out, but the inner circle was sacred.

And he froze.

Something shifted.

A stench, metallic and rotten, weighted the air.

Vampires.

They were here.

Close.

Inside the yard.

Holy fuck.

Something moved fast.

He didn’t have time to think about Tamaska, just locked that call from her away, like he hadn’t heard it.

He bunched his muscles as the vampire swooped in. Just one, but one was too many. It tried to stab him.

He knocked the sharp knife from its hand and leapt out of the way. And rounded on the creature.

This was worse than he thought it would be. He needed everything he had at his disposal.

Kodiak growled, his wolf close to the surface. He didn’t have time to change forms as he locked eyes with the vampire. Not if he wanted to live. That thing waited for the moment of vulnerability in the change, and he wasn’t giving it.

He’d fight it as is.

They circled each other, and he cast out his senses in case others were there, all while keeping his eyes locked on the bloodsucker.

How the fuck it had managed to get inside the clubhouse, Kodiak had no idea. The vampire leapt but he dodged, narrowly missing its gnashing bite.

A shiver raced through him, the stench of the thing threatening to overwhelm.

Normally he’d attack, but he needed to wear it down a little, strategize like their level four plan dictated. Then go for the kill in the most efficient way.

Fuck, he hoped Ash had Tamaska in the basement, safe. No, he couldn’t let his mind go there. That way led to panic and worry and that led to mistakes.

The vampire came at him again and he rolled out of the way of its kick, jumping to his feet.

“No stomach for this, dog?” It sneered, eyes glowing, teeth glistening and sharp, ready to tear into flesh.

Long gone was the elegant creature it had once been. Now it stood in its true state.
