“Oh, then I can use Boris. He’s hot.”

“Remind me to fire him when I get home,” he mutters. “Or kill him.”

“I’m only joking, you beast,” I laugh. “Cy is with me. She can be my moral support.”

She waves at me, demanding the phone, so I pass it over to her. “You seriously need to stop suffocating the girl,” Cyrille snaps. “It’s a routine check-up, not open heart surgery. In any case, I will be with her.” She nods and agrees with whatever Misha is saying. “Yes, I know. No, I won’t let her out of my sight. Yes. Yes. No. Okay. Bye, you overprotective weirdo.”

She hands my phone back to me with a smirk. She’s in a good mood today.

“The two of you are nauseatingly cute,” she remarks. “Like, I’m actually feeling a little queasy now.”

“Speaking of nauseatingly cute, how is Pavel doing?”

She blushes but tries to hide it. “He’s fine. We’re actually meeting for dinner after your appointment. We’re keeping things casual.”

“But you’re breaking bread together now. That’s a step up from casual sex. And it’s only been a few weeks. Moving fast!”

Her eyes dart around the living room in panic. “Shh! Don’t say those things so loud.”

“Nessa is up in her room. And you need to give her more credit. She loves you. No one in this family expects you to stay single forever.”

She sighs. “I know, it’s just… I still feel guilty.”

“Well, don’t,” I tell her firmly. “You deserve to feel special. You deserve a man who wants to take you out to dinner.”

She bites her bottom lip. “I really didn’t expect that from him. I mean, it feels so public.”

“But you’re comfortable around him?”

“Yes, in some ways. No, in others. I’m so…awareof myself around him. It’s like I’ve forgotten how to date.”

“Fair enough. You haven’t been in the dating game for over a decade.”

“That makes me sound old,” she groans.

“You just need to get out of your head a little. Focus on Pavel and the conversation.”

“I think that’s what I like about him the most,” she admits hesitantly. “He actually seems interested in talking. In getting to know me.”

“That’s a great sign!”

She gives me a half-hearted nod. “I suppose.”

I wrap my arm around her and lead her to the front door. “Trust me, Cyrille: this is a good thing. Tell me more. What kinds of things do you two talk about?”

“The family, mostly. You and Niki and Nessa. I talk a lot about Ilya, of course. I try not to, but sometimes, I slip up and end up being that annoying mom who can’t stop talking about her kid.”

I chuckle. “Well, it clearly hasn’t scared him off so far.”

We get in the car and drive to my appointment. As we pull into the hospital parking lot, Cyrille looks around. “I told Pavel to park in the rear lot. I’ll ride with him to the restaurant once Misha is here.”

“Okay.” Hopefully, she’ll be discreet. Misha doesn’t know about Pavel, and he might not be too thrilled about his sister-in-law dating a Vor.

As much as I love my husband, he still believes in a few archaic rules that were programmed into him since birth. And even if he wasn’t so rigid at times, he’s not exactly the most subtle of creatures. Cyrille is still in the fledgling state of her relationship with Pavel, so there’s no need to tell anyone until it becomes more serious.Ifit becomes more serious.

She escorts me inside and follows me back into the examination room. Usually, Dr. Mathers is waiting for me at the door, but she’s nowhere to be seen today.

“She’s not normally late,” Cyrille observes.
