“Neither is Misha. Must be something in the air.”

Cyrille smirks. “He’s more anal than Maksim was, and that’s saying something.”

“It’s cute, though.”

She takes my hand. “I love how far the two of you have come. It gives me hope that maybe there’s another love story out there for me.”

“A love story by the name of ‘Pavel,’ perhaps?”

She giggles. “Honestly, I don’t know. Maybe. I see myself potentially having feelings for Pavel in the future,” she says. “But for now? I don’t know. I think—”

Before she can finish her sentence, the door flies open and Misha storms in. “Did I miss anything?” he booms.

I smile and twine my fingers through his. “Nothing at all. Dr. Mathers isn’t even here yet.”

“That’s my cue,” announces Cyrille. “I’m gonna make myself scarce and leave you two lovebirds to it.” She leans in and gives me a peck on the cheek, then does the same with Misha. “Let me know how it goes.”

Misha takes in Cyrille’s all-white silk ensemble. “Do you have a meeting after this? You look nice.”

“Dinner plans, actually. With a friend. I’ll see you guys later.” She blows us a kiss and steps out.

“She seems to be in a better place lately.” Misha glances at me shrewdly. “Something new in her life that I should know about?”

Damn, the man is obnoxiously perceptive. “Um… no?”

“You’re a terrible liar.”

“You’re being nosy. Whatever is going on in Cyrille’s life is her business.”

“And yours, apparently.”

“She confided in me.”

His eyes widen. “So thereissomething going on in Cyrille’s life.”

I groan. “I’m pregnant. Stop stressing me out.”

“You can’t always use that as an excuse.”

“I’ll only use it until these kids pop out. Then I’m gonna use the whole ‘new motherhood’ thing until they’re five. After that, it’s the heartbreak of them not being my little babies anymore. Then they’ll be teens, so that’s stressful, too, then they’ll go to college and…”

He’s still chuckling and I’m still talking when Dr. Mathers walks into the room, looking uncharacteristically flustered. “I’m so sorry. It’s been a hell of a morning. I had three deliveries, and one ended up being a complicated C-section. It took longer than expected.”

“Are the mother and baby okay?” I ask.

She smiles triumphantly. “Of course. They don’t call me the best for nothing. Now, let’s get this show on the road, shall we? You guys must be waiting to see those little munchkins of yours.”

“Yes!” I squeeze Misha’s hand.

Dr. Mathers lifts up my blouse and squeezes the gel onto my rounded stomach. She probes at my stomach. Instantly, I see two little forms wiggling and shifting on the screen.

“Aw, look at them in there together!” Dr. Mathers points to the screen. “It’s like they’re holding hands.”

“Oh my God,” I gasp. “I see them!”

Dr. Mathers laughs. “It looks like your little girl has a tight hold of her brother.”

It takes a second for the words to process. For me to understand what Dr. Mathers just said. Then my jaw hangs open. “What did you say?”
