He shoots me a wink over his shoulder and then the door slams.

By the time I regain control of my legs and stand up to follow him, the door bursts open again. I scream and fall back just as Misha hauls me against his sturdy chest. “Are you okay? Where is he?”

“He just left! You—”

“Fan out!” Misha roars. “He should still be in the building. Get the motherfucker before he gets away!”

The men in the hallway scatter in every direction. Misha is obviously itching to join the hunt, but he’s still worried about me. His hands outline my face. “Are you okay? Did he hurt you?”

“No,” I assure him. “I’m fine.”

“How the fuck did he get past security?” Misha asks, mostly to himself. “How the fuck did he get all the way up here? Heads are gonna roll for this.”

I grab his hands. “Misha, calm down. Just breathe.”

His expression is murderous. Even when he blows out a breath, it doesn’t seem to make a difference.

“You can go, you know?” I tell him. “I’m okay.”

“I’m not leaving you for another fucking second,” he says. “Collect your things. You’re done working from the office. From now on, you’re staying at home. I’m not letting you out of my sight.”

MISHA

It’s almost 2:30 in the morning when I slip upstairs from my home office to the bedroom, but Paige is up and waiting for me.

She’s wearing one of my sweaters and sitting by the window in a beam of melted moonlight. Her legs are drawn up underneath her, and she looks so young with her hair flowing down her shoulders in wild waves.

The moment I walk through the door, she turns to me. “Did they find him?”

I sigh and shake my head. “His trail went cold. He slipped through our fingers. Again.”

“How is that possible?”

I’ve asked myself that same question too many times to count in the last couple hours. And every time, I arrive at the same unforgivable conclusion.

“There’s only one way it’s possible: I have a mole.”

“Someone on the inside is a traitor?” Her brow knits together, and I know she’s thinking the same thing I am.How could someone I trust do this to me?

I cross the distance and tuck a loose lock of hair behind her ear. “You should be sleeping. I don’t want you worrying about any of this. I’m sorry you had to endure what you did today.”

“I’m not concerned about myself. I’m worried about… well…”

Her eyes dart to mine, and I see something I didn’t before: Paige isn’t just worried about me. She’s keeping something from me.

“Paige,” I growl, “what’s going on?”

She exhales sharply. “I have a… a feeling. Maybe it’s nothing, I don’t know. But it’s keeping me awake. It took me hours to fall asleep in the first place, and then I woke up and couldn’t get back to sleep. This thought just keeps tickling the back of my mind.”

“Paige, you’re saying a lot of words without actually saying anything.”

She chews on her bottom lip. “I’m supposed to be keeping this a secret.”

“We’re married. We don’t keep secrets from one another anymore.”

“I know, but this was an innocent secret. At least, I thought it was. But maybe…”
