“Ohhh,” I whistle between my teeth. “That forbidden type of love, huh?”

“Probably made it hotter. I know it did for me and Danny,” she winks.

“How did the Chief take that? I heard Danny’s a Rookie.”

“Yeah, but he’s almost done with that now. Dad had a few things to say, and it wasn’t as easy as we thought it would be at first. We’ve settled in though, and Dad’s been really accepting of us. I have issues with his job; if anyone knows how dangerous being a firefighter is, it’s me. I’ve lived through a lot of on the job injuries and deaths, so I definitely say my prayers every night when he goes out on duty. But I’m sure that’s not what you wanted to hear,” she waves her hand away.

“No, I get it.” I shift, thinking about the reason I left.

There’s another knock at the door, and a nurse comes in. “Delia, are you ready for a shower?”

“I am. Will you come back and see me?” I ask Hayden. “I could use all the friends I can get.”

“Sure will. I imagine you’ll be over at Chance’s?”

“Yup.”

“Then you can count on me dropping by. I get lonely when Danny’s at work. I’m a teller at the bank, but his hours are much longer than mine.”

I remember those days well, when I’d sit at home and wonder when Chance might get home, if he was okay and what he was seeing. When we first got married and he accepted the position, it drove me nuts until I started crocheting. I got good enough that I made it a side business when I left. It put food on the table for me and Gavin more than once.

“See ya, Hayden.” I give her a small wave goodbye.

Once she leaves, I look up at the nurse. “I’m ready for that shower, whenever you are.”

Thirty minuteslater I’m back in bed, weak as a newborn and shaking. If there’s anything that proves I’m not going to be able to stay by myself, it’s this. There’s absolutely no way I’ll be able to take care of myself, much less me and Gavin.

“Are you okay?” the nurse asks.

“Tired and in pain,” I grimace.

“I’ll get you some more pain medication, and I’ll make sure everyone leaves you alone for the rest of the night.”

“Will you allow my husband inside? He’s supposed to be bringing me some stuff later on.”

She glances at her watch. “Visiting hours are over in a few minutes, but I’ll leave notice at the nurse’s station.”

“How is my son?” I lean back against the bed as she administers the pain medication.

“Asleep, just like you will be here soon.”

“Can I see him tomorrow?” Even I can hear my words slurring.

“We’ll make sure of that. Hopefully you’ll be discharged.”

As I go to sleep, all I can think about is how I’d planned for this to go, and how it’s gotten so messed up. Maybe, just maybe, this second chance we’re being given can be the one where we make it right.

CHAPTERTEN

Chance

Walking into Sam’s Club,I have no idea what the fuck I’m doing. Consulting the list I made, I look for the car seat Delia had Gavin in when they wrecked. I not only wrote down the name, but took copious amounts of pictures so there would be no way I’d fuck this up.

“Chance, hey.”

Looking around, I see a guy I went to high school with. His name is on the tip of my tongue, and when I can’t remember it, I glance down at his name tag. Walter. Yeah, we all used to call him Wally, but seeing as how his name tag says manager, perhaps he prefers his given name now.
