Both the doctor and nurses exit the room, leaving us alone. This is the first time we’ve been alone since the night before she left. It’s awkward, and neither one of us seems to want to be the first one to say anything.

“Chance,” she starts. “I know this is a surprise for you.”

I huff out a dry chuckle. “Surprise is one way of putting it. I never thought I was gonna see you again,” I admit.

“I know,” she looks down at her hands. “My mind wasn’t in a good place when I found out I was pregnant with him, and when he was born,” she explains. “It’s a lot to explain.”

“Okay, first things first. In order for him to be able to come to the house, I’m going to need to get him a few things. Can you tell me what he needs?” I pull out my phone, ready to make a list.

She rubs at her forehead. “He sleeps in a toddler bed. There were some clothes in the car, along with toys. His car seat is definitely done.”

My mind is moving a thousand miles an hour. “Okay, so what I’m going to do is go down to the station. They have everything that was in the car stored there for now. If there’s anything that can be saved for either one of you, I’ll grab it. Anything else, I’ll go buy before you two come home with me. Can you text me sizes? They found your ”

Delia rolls her lips together. “You still have the same cell phone number?”

“Yeah,” I give her a soft smile. “I never wanted to change it. Ya know, just in case you wanted to call me. I was scared if I did, I’d miss your call.”

“I have a lot to explain to you, Chance.”

“You sure do, but that doesn’t have to happen today,” I assure her. “Whatever it was you needed back then I’m going to make sure you get now, because I won’t go through this again.”

With that promise, I leave the room and shut the door. My heart pounds as I lean back against the solid strength, hoping like hell it can hold me up.

CHAPTERNINE

Delia

Although beingwith Chance is what I wanted when I decided to come back to Bradford, this isn’t exactly how I imagined it going, not by a longshot. Closing my eyes I take a deep breath, but all I can see is the truck coming toward Gavin and I.

The horrible part of it was I knew what was going to happen before it did. I tried to make myself small, wished I could hop into the back seat and protect Gavin with my arms around him.

There’s a knock at my door, and since I don’t know of anyone who would be coming to visit, I answer hesitantly. “Come in.”

In walks Hayden Hudson, still pretty as ever. “Hey, Delia. I don’t know if you remember me or not.”

“Of course I do. How’s your dad?”

“He’s good,” she walks toward me carrying a bag. “I’m more worried about you. How are you holding up?”

I stretch out. “I’ve had better days,” I admit, “but I can’t complain. We were very lucky.”

“You were,” she agrees. “I brought you some clothes. We look to be about the same size. I know Chance is headed toward Bradford Station to get you what was in your car, but I also know a lot of that may have to be washed. I figured you might want something to lounge around in.” She indicates the bag she’s carrying.

“Thanks. They told me I can take a shower soon, so this will be nice to change into.”

“There’s a hair brush, some ponytail holders, and a few clips in there too. I swung by Walmart.”

“I can’t tell you how much this means to me. Back before I left, there weren’t any other girlfriends or wives. I was the only one and it was hard, because I wanted friendship so much,” I find myself admitting to her. “Maybe if I’d had friendship, I wouldn’t have left Chance.”

She offers me a smile, reaching over to grab my hand. “There’s a lot of water under the bridge for you here, but I want you to know I don’t know any of what happened, and I’m not here to judge you. Right now there are two of us.”

“Really?” I adjust in the bed, grimacing as I try to make myself comfortable. “Who else has a lady now?”

She grins. “Believe it or not, Cam. He fell for his sister’s best friend.”

“Oh I bet that went over well,” I grin, trying to keep from laughing. It hurts to laugh.

“Even better because she’s Trinity’s babysitter.”
