“We did,” I throw my arms around his neck and kiss him thoroughly.
Eventually, I know all the memories we had before that were bad will be replaced with good ones, and I can’t wait to see what Gavin says about being a big brother.

Gauge
Friday.
It used to be my favorite day of the week.
These days, it’s just the day I look forward to the least.
It’s my day to meet with the counselor the fire department set me up with.
“Hey Gauge,” the girl who works the front desk smiles shyly at me.
She’s always been so nice every time I come in here. Over the last few weeks she’s been opening up a little more, and maybe I have been too. She talks to me a little more each and every time.
“Hey, Jade,” I greet her. “How’s it going?”
“It’s been a long day,” she sighs. “Had to go for a doctor’s appointment of my own. You know how you figure those days will be easier, and it won’t be nearly as long? But then you come back and you wish you’d taken the whole day off?”
I laugh, because I know what she means. “Yes, I’m not going back to work after this is over.”
“Good for you,” she holds up her hand in solidarity.
I press my palm into hers with a high five. The sleeve of her sweatshirt slides down her arm with the force, and when it does, I see a scar on her forearm. It’s almost the exact same one I have on my own.
Our eyes meet, and in that moment, I know she understands.
And for once I don’t feel so fucking alone.
