“How’s Gavin?” she questions urgently. “Where is he?”

“With me.”

Our eyes meet and the entire room goes quiet, almost as if everyone there knows exactly what we were to each other and how she left me. Enough of them in here do know. I work closely with them because of what I do for the fire department. I don’t exactly want to do this with everyone in here, but we can’t choose where we are right now.

“Chance.”

She says my name on a gusted breath; like she can’t believe I’m standing in front of.

“Yeah. Trust me, I’m as shocked as you are. Let the doctor take a look at you. Gavin’s hurt, but he’s fine.”

She seems to relax, leaning back against the bed. “Okay, thank you.”

I take a seat over to the side, doing my best to stay out of everyone’s way. What I really want to do is ask her where she’s been and what the fuck I’ve missed, but I manage to stay quiet as the doctor examines her. At least it appears she doesn’t have any type of memory loss.

I watch as he performs perfunctory tests on her, feeling relief when it looks like most everything appears to be fine.

“Okay,” the doctor reaches down for her legs, doing some tests to see how they move. “That’s good. Can you squeeze my fingers?” He reaches toward her.

She does, but I notice a grimace on her face. Biting my tongue isn’t easy, but I manage to do it.

“Is it okay for me to discuss this with him in here?” he asks, motioning toward me.

“We’re still married,” she whispers.

“It’s up to you,” I tilt my chin in her direction. “If you don’t want me to hear what’s going on, I can leave.”

“No,” she shakes her head. “It’s okay.”

He clears his throat. “You are a really lucky lady. I’m not seeing any deficits other than some weakness in your hands and the effects of a concussion. Other than that, you seem to be okay. I’m waiting for the results of your MRI, but you’ve woken up and you’re alert. I’m surprised because I heard what the accident scene looked like. I can’t reiterate enough how lucky you are.”

“I realize how lucky we both are,” she argues. “I saw the truck coming at me. It was flipped over on its side and sliding, as if it was on a sheet of ice.”

“Because of the leaves on the road,” I supply my thoughts. “The rain and leaves made it dangerous.”

“It’s been years since I’ve been up here,” she wrings her fingers in her lap. “I should’ve remembered how it is as summer turns into fall. What’s wrong with Gavin?”

I watch as she pays attention to the doctor, answering questions he’s asking about our son. I wish I knew those answers. She’s alert, not having difficulty, and that makes me feel better about the whole situation.

“Chance?”

I’ve zoned out and I’m unsure what I was just asked. “Sorry?”

“Will your wife and son be staying with you?”

My eyes immediately go over to Delia. The answer comes out of my mouth before I even think about it. “They will be.”

“Great, as soon as we get the results of her MRI, I’ll be seeing when we can discharge. It’s looking like it will be tomorrow, along with Gavin.”

I nod. “Perfect. If you think they’re both good enough to go, I’ll stand by what you think is best.”

“I trust them going home with you because of what you do for a living.”

Inhaling, I start making a list of things I need to get in order to make it easier for them to stay with me. “Sounds good.”

“Okay, Delia, I’ll be back with you as soon as I get your test results.”

“Thank you, Doctor,” she says.
