“He’s dead,” I state bluntly.

“Is he?” He grins. “Then yes, my final test, and you passed with flying colours, though we never anticipated you would form such a close bond with the others. That will be severed though, not to worry, since we need you clear-headed.”

“Shut up!” I roar as I press against his gun. “Kill me and be done with it.”

“Oh, Nova, you still don’t get it, do you? All of this was to bring you home. No, you won’t die, but they will.” He swings the gun, ready to fire, before I slam my arm down, breaking his.

He falls back with a roar and the shot goes wide, hitting a window.

The air is instantly sucked out, and the plane rattles and nosedives for a moment before it straightens. I’m about to end this, to end him, when the hole gets bigger and the chairs rip from the walls and slam through the windows. I grab the wall and hold on.

“D! Cockpit!” Louis roars as he tries to get to me.

D crawls past me, ripping open the door and slamming it shut. Looking out of the window, I watch a chair hit the engine, and we start to nosedive again. I feel D struggling to try and right the plane. He yells that the side of the mountain is rapidly approaching, and I know we are going to crash.

Whipping my head back around, I leap for William to end this just as we hit.

* * *

We are all thrown about as we hit. D manages to straighten us as much as possible, and that’s the only thing that saves us. Even so, I feel my shoulder pop out of place and my ribs crack. My head smacks into the side until Nico catches me as I fly about and pulls me into his arms, wrapping himself around me as we hit once more, and everything goes dark.

I open my eyes with a groan as I feel his arms slipping from around me. Rolling, I see Nico’s out cold. Panic instantly takes hold, but his chest is rising and falling. Isaac is groaning and clutching his bullet wound on his side. Louis is on his knees, coughing. Jonas holds onto a rope that was once on the side and not the ceiling, and he lets go and falls to his back with a thump.

Staggering to my feet, I rush to the cockpit, ripping open the door to see D in his chair, wiping at a head wound but alive.

My eyes then swing to William.

He’s groaning and holding his stomach, where a metal bar is speared through his gut, pinning him in place. Dropping to my knees before him, I watch the blood pool around his hands as he tries to staunch the flow. He blinks repeatedly, his mouth moving.

Shock.

Gripping my shoulder, I pop it back into position with a grunt. There’s not much I can do about the other aches and pains, but we are all alive, and that’s what matters.

William, however, is dying, and I let it happen, surrounded by his creations, his experiments, and his enemies as he does.

Forgotten and unimportant.

“Is that all the research back there?” I demand, needing answers.

“Yes, in the vault, the other . . . The others are at your father’s house and lab.” He coughs, splattering blood on his lips and chin.

His head falls back, but he holds my gaze. “I guess we all think we are so invincible, so immortal, until the end,” he jokes bitterly. “But you? You truly are unstoppable, like he promised.”

I don’t speak, and he smiles, his teeth and lips covered in his blood as he chokes on it, just like he threatened to do to me.

“He’s alive.” He coughs, the force racking his body.

Snarling, I grab his shoulders and slap him until he focuses on me again.

“Who is?” I demand as he groans. “Who is?” I yell.

His head lolls back as his eyes start to close, and his whisper comes out half broken and dead. “Your father. Your father is alive.”

“No,” I whisper.

“This . . . This was all his plan.” He coughs again, the sound wet and rattling. “To get you back. One last experiment.”

Then I watch as he takes his last breath.
