“Nova, it could be a lie from a dying man, one last way to hurt you,” Louis murmurs. I didn’t even know they were close.

I can’t speak over my panic because deep down, I believe him.

There’s one way to . . . Reaching forward, I search through his pockets until I find his phone. Using his thumb, I unlock it and scroll through his call list and hit the last number.

The only number he has rung.

The ringing is loud, even over the groan of the plane and the flames licking at it.

“We need to move,” Louis says. “It’s over, Nova. Let’s go!”

I don’t move, don’t speak, as it rings in my ear.

There’s a click.

“Hello?”

My world falls apart as I hear my father’s sharp and commanding voice.

One I would know anywhere.

One that sends shivers of fear through me.

“Hello?” There’s silence then. “Novaleen, is that you?” He sounds way too overjoyed about it.

“You’re alive,” I croak.

“And you found him for me. Thank you for that. I wish I could have seen it. Is he dead?” he asks curiously.

“You’re alive,” I repeat.

“Do not state the obvious, girl,” he admonishes, his usual cold tone snapping me from my shock as I tighten my blood-soaked hold on the phone.

He’s alive.

The bastard is alive and has been playing us this entire time.

“I’m coming for you. Nowhere is safe,” I snarl, and before he can answer, I crush the phone in my grip then turn to see five shocked faces.

“This isn’t over. Not yet.” I stand and storm from the plane, ready to hunt my father down.

The man who started all this.

The one who’s supposed to be in the ground.

I thought I was unstoppable, but what if it was all a lie?

What if it was all a pretty lie . . .
