Why is that thought so thrilling?

No one else has ever gotten close, but I guess only time will tell. I don’t trust them wholly, I don’t trust anyone that much, but there’s definitely a bond between us all since we share trauma and went through the same things. Maybe that’s why I feel like I know them already and fit in so easily.

I remind myself to build my guard up though. Just because we have a common enemy and similar pasts doesn’t mean they won’t fuck me over when they get what they want. For all I know, they could want Dad’s research to continue it, but I don’t believe that. They seem too angry and fucked up by their pasts to want to inflict that on anyone else, but I don’t trust the government, that’s for sure, and they are pulling their strings.

I’ll keep my distance for now, and I’ll do what they want me to do so I can end this, even if it means killing them if they get in my way.

Before this, I was lost, but now I have a purpose, and I know it’s right. I have to finish this. It started with me, and now it ends with me.

Louis leads us through the corridors and down a level to a cafeteria. “Go grab a seat over there with Dimitri and Isaac. I’ll get your food.”

I hesitate, hating that show of weakness, but then I nod and stride over, sitting on the metal chair opposite them at the long table. “Morning.”

Dimitri smiles. In one hand, he has a book which looks like gibberish, and in the other, he has a spoon in some porridge. Isaac has a tablet in front of him showing charts, along with a full plate of fruit with toast to the side.

“Morning, Nova. How are you feeling?” he asks cheerfully, closing the tablet’s cover.

“Oh fuck, you’re a morning person!” I playfully groan, making him grin wider. Dimitri chuckles as he shuts his book.

“Holy shit, you got D to shut his book. It’s the boobs, right, D?” Jonas asks as he plonks his tray down next to me, grabs his chair, and sits backwards.

Dimitri just rolls his eyes as he stirs his porridge.

“Maybe it’s my winning personality,” I deadpan, making Isaac laugh.

Louis places a tray before me. It has fruit, toast, cheeses, and a croissant, as well as some water and cranberry juice. Offering him a, “Thanks,” I pick at the fruit as he sits next to me with an omelette. Nico sits next to Dimitri with a full English breakfast spread out on a massive plate. When he sees me watching, he sighs and offers me the plate, so I quickly pass him mine and take his, digging into the food.

“Did he just share food?” Jonas whispers.

A spoon flies through the air and hits Jonas right in the face, and I almost choke on my beans when I see Nico staring innocently at him, even though we all know he threw it.

“Children,” Louis mutters. “Behave.”

Smirking, I devour my food.

“Fucking hell, hungry?” Jonas nudges me.

I freeze as memories flash through my head, and then I drop my fork and turn my glare on him. “My father used to starve me to see how my body and mind would react under stress. I almost died more than once, and then when he would let me eat, he would make me so sick I hated it. When I got free, I was fucking poor and couldn’t afford food either, so excuse me for enjoying it when I can,” I snap.

His eyes widen and then narrow, filling with anger. “If he wasn’t dead, I’d kill him.”

“Join the fucking club,” I mutter but settle down. When I glance back at the table, the others are staring, but luckily, there’s no pity in their eyes, just understanding. I still hate all the attention. “So today?” I prompt.

Louis takes the hint, sipping his coffee and settling back. “We will hook you to a machine to help enhance your memory until we can figure out the entrance to the research area.”

“Machine?” I arch my eyebrow. I didn’t have a clue how they were going to do this, but Louis seemed so sure.

“Machine.” Louis nods. “Dimitri.”

“Anything in your past is stored in your brain. You only need the right stimuli to access it. Correct, Isaac?”

“Correct. The right triggers, words, or even sights or smells could help. The machine will assist with this,” Isaac explains.

That’s not what I was expecting at all, to be honest.

“This machine can help you access your memories. It was originally one of your father—Dr. Davis’s creations, but Dimitri has since worked on it to make it safer, cleaner, and stronger. All you need to do is relax and trust us. We will be with you the entire time to guide you through it. If you want to stop at all, just let us know. I’ll monitor your vitals too,” Isaac says, looking worried even as he comforts me.

“Stop coddling her.” Jonas snorts. “She’s not a baby. She can handle this. She survived Dr. Dick and his experiments, so this is nothing, right, Nova?” He winks at me.
