I knew back then she was like us. Some of the others wondered if Dr. Davis took it easier on her since she was his own blood, but he didn’t. If anything, he was harder on her.

This woman at my side is a warrior. She has survived the unthinkable, and she is still able to laugh.

It astounds me.

She looks up like she feels my gaze, her laughter fading into a knowing smile that has my cock hardening. “Thank you for coming after me,” she murmurs softly just for me.

“Okay, well, let’s go take a break. We can try another day if you want to,” Isaac starts.

Her head whips around, and before she speaks, I know what she’s going to say. It’s what I would do. Nova doesn’t give up, especially with others depending on her. “No, we go back and try again. I think I can get there. It was just a shock is all.”

He groans. “Nova.”

“Nova,” Louis calls. “We almost lost you. We can find another way—”

“No, this is the way. Everything I went through . . .” Her voice breaks, so she swallows. “It has to mean something. I have to do this. You understand that, right?”

We do. After all, isn’t that why we are all here?

“It’s her choice,” I state, interrupting their bickering, and they all turn to me in shock. They are probably wondering why I agreed with her, since I’m the one always trying to outrun my demons. Here I am, however, standing with her as she faces her own. They all know parts of what I went through, especially Louis since he was the one who found me, and he looks at me now knowingly.

Swallowing, I allow some weakness to enter my words. “If I could help save people, even if it meant experiencing everything again, I would. I survived it once. I can survive it again.” Looking at her, I nod then add, “They are just memories. They can’t hurt you anymore.”

“Thank you.” She reaches out and squeezes my arm before rolling back her shoulders and stepping closer to them. “Then let’s get back to it,” she says, walking past them.

They all turn, eyeing her, but I see their pride and wonder.

I feel it too. Her strength astounds me.

We follow after her. Her father might have been our torturer, our enemy, but his daughter is our salvation.

She reminds me of what it means to be unstoppable.

SIXTEEN

Once we’re back at the lab, she sits in the chair and waits with her chin tilted high in defiance, daring us to stop her. We won’t. This is her choice. She knows her limits better than we do. After seeing hints of her past, though, I don’t think there is anything she couldn’t survive. Her father was an evil, cruel man. He did terrible things to me for most of my childhood, things that have left me scarred, but to do that to your own daughter . . .

It must be soul destroying to wonder why your father hates you so much. At least he was just a stranger to us, but to her, he was supposed to protect her, love her, and teach her right from wrong. Instead, he broke her over and over.

He tried to ruin her.

He did not succeed, though, because there is one thing his data could never tell Dr. Davis, and that’s a soul’s strength. Children like us are unbreakable. Unstoppable.

Just like his daughter.

She could choose to hide and spend the rest of her life in peace, healing from what happened, but instead, she’s here, choosing to help us end this once and for all. And that is something he never could have explained with tests or genetics.

It’s something you are born with.

“Are you ready?” I ask, knowing she won’t back down, not when she has set her mind to it. It’s an attractive quality, and my opinion of her triples tenfold.

“No, but let’s do it.” She grins, making Jonas laugh.

He blows her a kiss. “That’s my girl.”

She flips him the finger before closing her eyes and focusing on her past. The transformation instantly comes over her. Her eyes tighten in pain, her lips tilt down, and her cheeks pale. She looks like she’s seen a ghost, which I guess she has.

Her father.
