The hairs along the back of his neck began to rise, and every muscle and sense in his body went on high alert.

“Spence, what’s wrong,” said Harper, watching as he looked again in the rearview mirror. “Is someone back there?”

“I’m probably just being paranoid, but just in case, get my phone, call Alice, and let her know we may have picked up a tail.”

Harper glanced over her shoulder. “Do you think we did?”

“As I said, I’m probably just being overly cautious, but call Alice.”

Harper picked up his phone, called Alice, and gave her directions as to where they were traveling.

Harper ended the call. “Alice says they’re scrambling. What do you see?”

“Nothing and that’s the problem. I think I am seeing a black void where I should see something. Like a kind of shadow trying to stay with us without being seen. This kind of inky darkness before it gets pitch black and the moon and stars begin to shed some light can play tricks on you, but something doesn’t feel right.”

Spence slowed the truck, and it seemed that the shadow slowed, too. Harper looked in the sideview mirror, trying to get a different angle. “I could be wrong, but I think I see something, as well.”

“Call Alice again. Put her on speaker.”

“Yeah, boss,” answered Alice.

“We’ve picked up a tail who’s going to great lengths to ensure they’re not seen.”

“We are en route. Lights and sirens?” she asked calmly.

“I think that might be best,” answered Spence.

They were just passing one of the small access roads as Spence checked the rearview mirror again. Suddenly, something slammed into the passenger side of the truck, making Harper’s pickup lurch to the side.

“Boss? What the fuck?”

“We’ve got two of them. One just hit Harper’s side. You okay, Harper?”

“No, I’m not okay. That sonofabitch just slammed into my truck, and it looks like he’s going to try again. Well, fuck that!”

Harper reached behind her and opened the fasteners that held two guns in place—a rifle and a pump action shotgun. Harper pulled the shotgun and reached into the glove compartment for two shells. As the dark SUV from the side made another run at him, Harper rolled down the window and fired almost point blank, shattering the windshield of the other vehicle.

CHAPTER10

Spence couldn’t help but grin. Most women would have been shaking in their boots, crying and screaming—most men, for that matter—but not Harper. She’d just grabbed a gun and taken care of business. He knew it was wrong on so many levels, but it kind of turned him on.

“Shit, Spence, what’s happening?” cried Alice over the phone, bringing him back to reality.

“Nothing much. Harper just took out the SUV that hit us. He’ll be easy to spot. He has no windshield, and my guess is at the very least the occupants of the front have taken some damage. Way to go, sweetheart.”

He might have become downright jovial about the whole thing but the shadow from behind decided to make its presence known by flipping on its high beams and ramming them from behind.

“Your bosses are going to pay for the damage to my truck,” she said, reloading the shot gun and opening the rear window. “Come on up, you bastard.”

“Hang on, Harper,” he said as he floored the pickup, pulling away from the pursuing vehicle, but not for long.

Someone, most likely associated with Dulcie’s murder, was trying to kill them, and he suspected get the laptop. But how did they know they had it?

“Alice,” Spence said evenly. “Get somebody in Jackson Hole to verify the whereabouts of Mike Bradley of Special Deliveries on Your Schedule. I want eyes on him.”

“On it. Do you think he’s in on it?”

“Doubtful. I want to make sure he’s okay. If they find him, I want him, and his family, taken into protective custody.” The SUV was gaining. “How far out are you?”
