“Cornered in his home office with several guards,” Ivan answered. They both got out of the car. Nikolai noted the two other cars nearby. They belonged to his men. The street, he noticed, was eerily quiet this early in the morning.

“Let’s go,” Nikolai said. Ivan and he breezed past the gate. The guards were notably absent. The guards did not belong to the security firm Vito employed. Tempting them with money to be absent from their post one day had been easy enough.

“I’m getting too old for this,” Nikolai said. The walk from the gate to the ugly castle’s front door made him winded.

“No offense, Boss, but I told you we could have done this operation without you,” Ivan said.

“I wanted to come,” Nikolai said.“I want to describe to Paolo, in great detail, how his brother shit himself after I shot him between the eyes.”

Ivan chuckled. His second was out for blood as much as Nikolai was. Yuri meant plenty to both of them and the man would be sorely missed.

Nikolai had already spoken to Yuri’s wife face-to-face, assured her that the Bratva would be there for her. It hadn’t been an easy conversation, but Nikolai never abandoned the families of the men who served him.

“What didyou tell your wife about today’s operation?” Ivan asked.

“Not much, I simply told Veronica I’d be repaying old debts today,” Nikolai said.

“She bought that?” Ivan asked, sounding genuinely curious.

“No, but Veronica understands there’s a score to be settled, so she let it be,” Nikolai answered.

“You married a good woman,” Ivan remarked. “I’ve never seen you this content.”

“She makes me happy. Ours might have started as an arranged match but it worked out in the end,” Nikolai said.

In fact, he couldn’t wait to get this sordid business over with so he could return to his wife’s warm embrace. He had been reluctant to leave their bed this morning, especially when she’d cuddled up to him and pressed her breasts against his chest. In the end, Nikolai got up, dressed, and left the apartment. There was work to be done.

They entered the mansion and before they could head upstairs to where Vito and his remaining men were holed up, Peter, one of his senior associates, ran up to them. The older Bratva sweated profusely and he looked pissed. Seeing Nikolai, he took deep breaths. Nikolai noticed his gun was out. Peter also had blood splatters on his suit.

“What happened?” Nikolai asked.

“We searched the house as ordered and found a basement and sub-basement,” Peter reported. His blue eyes gleamed with fury.“Nikolai, he’s been keeping merchandise down there.”

By merchandise, Peter could only mean people. Ivan whistled softly under his breath. “I heard Vito kept his toys under his pleasure palace but the rumors were hard to confirm,” Ivan said.

“Vito kept them in terrible condition. At least half are dead, the other half are dying. There’s at least twenty women still alive,” Peter said.

“Take more men and help them out. We’ll do what we can for these victims,” Nikolai answered.

He could turn this discovery into an opportunity. Of course, he wasn’t heartless. He would do what he could to help these victims, but it wouldn’t hurt to leak this news to the public. Something like this could bring the entire La Russa Familia down and Nikolai could avoid minimal bloodshed in the process.

“I know that smile, Boss. You thought of something?” Ivan asked.

“Indeed. Peter, get to work helping the women out of those cells. Have someone call the local paramedics,” Nikolai said. Once Peter had left, Ivan turned to him, eyebrows raised.

“You want the public to know about this raid? Ah, I can see the wheels turning in your head. That’s a brilliant move, Boss,” Ivan said.

“Indeed. Now that’s taken care of, it’s time we see Vito,” Nikolai said. “Our men haven’t breached his office?”

“They’ve been told to wait, as you ordered,” Ivan informed him.

“Good. Shall we?” Nikolai asked.

They both climbed the stairs to the second floor. Bodies littered this area, particularly those of men wearing body armour and toting guns. Unlike the guards at the front gate who could be bought off, these mercenaries were hired to safeguard Vito. Their deaths had been a necessary evil.

Nikolai spotted three of his men gathered outside one door, guns drawn, their bodies tense. One of them saw Nikolai and a wave of relief passed his face.

“The boss is here,” he said.
