Veronica slid her fingers up his unshaven cheek. Their gazes locked. Who was Veronica kidding? Everything changed when that assassin murdered her father before her very eyes. She could not be the same naive person she’d been. This vengeful side of her scared her as much as her attraction to Nikolai but Veronica had only one option left to her—to ride the incoming storm.

“Very good, Veronica,” Nikolai said and smiled.

Then he cupped her chin and kissed her. He was all roughness and bite but that was exactly what she needed. She liked to press his tailored suit against her breasts. She rubbed herself against him, enjoying his practiced tongue and teeth. When their lips touched, nothing else mattered. The rest of the world and her problems seemed to melt away, including her unexpected grief and wrath.

Nikolai continued plundering her mouth as he lifted the hem of her nightgown. He slipped his hand past her thigh and moved to her drenched panties. Veronica moaned when he slipped his fingers under the wet fabric and began caressing her pussy lips. She cried out as he released her mouth. Nikolai rubbed her back-and-forth, watching the expression on her face all the while.

It was the hottest thing Veronica had ever seen. He moved to her clit, rubbing the sensitive area. Veronica buried her face into the side of his neck. When Nikolai slipped two fingers inside her velvet heat, Veronica cried out and bit his neck. Nikolai groaned in her ear.

“Next time, it will be my cock inside you,” he whispered in her ear.

Veronica groaned in anticipation. Never before had any man rendered her body completely helpless like this. Just a kiss and touch and Nikolai could unravel her.

“Yes,” she murmured.“When?”

“Soon,” he decided.“After I flush out the rats who had gathered together to plot your father’s demise.”

“I’m looking forward to seeing how this game plays out,” she told him.

“See?” he asked, nibbling the lobe of her left ear.“Predator.”

Chapter Five

Nikolai watched their guest squirm under Ivan’s tender mercies. Ivan had always been good with a blade and his second went about his task with gusto.

Suspended in the air and with his hands restrained and tied to a hook bolted to the ceiling, Mario La Russa could do nothing but scream. Obscenities spilled from his lips, followed by pleas. It didn’t take long for the associate to break down. Nikolai had been busy over the course of the week. He hated to be away from his fiancée but Veronica assured him she could handle their wedding plans on her own. His Veronica understood Nikolai had important work to do.

“Wait, what did he say?” Nikolai asked.

Ivan stepped back, wiping his favorite skinning knife with a dirty handkerchief.

“Repeat what you just told me in a louder voice,” Ivan instructed Mario.

Mario looked at Nikolai with tear-filled eyes. The associate only leered at Ivan and him earlier. Mario, like all the guests that had come before him, told Nikolai he would never break.

They all did in the end, especially after Ivan went to work on them. During the early days, when his father had been Pakhan, Nikolai had gotten his own hands dirty. He didn’t mind the messy work. Nikolai always did what was required of him. Everything was for the good of the family after all.

Now that he had taken over his father’s position as head of the Baranov Bratva, Nikolai had since learned how to delegate. Mario hesitated. Ivan got near him with his knife and Mario opened his mouth.

“Yes, the Don hired Reid Hyde to assassinate Arturo Romano and his daughter,” Mario blurted.

It had taken Nikolai a week to narrow down Arturo’s list of enemies. Finally, it was down to either the La Russa Familia or the Carlino Familia. Nikolai had ordered Ivan to take two associates from both families for efficiency. He told his second to pick men who were high enough on the command chain privy to sensitive information and men who were easy enough to break.

“Evidence of this?” Nikolai asked.

“Hyde wanted everything in writing, so the Don gave him a digital contract to sign,” Mario said, sounding resigned. The associate knew traitors weren’t welcome in any family. He had signed his own death warrant by revealing so much information.

“Very well. Ivan, we have no further need for him,” Nikolai said.

He had ways to ascertain if Mario was lying. Besides, a digital contract would be easy to track. Nikolai had talented hackers at his disposal. Paolo La Russa, the Don of the La Russa family, didn’t seem like the kind of man who would invest heavily in cybersecurity. The older Dons usually cared little for such matters.

“Shall I throw him back to the streets, Boss?” Ivan asked, grinning maniacally at Mario.

“Kill me now. Please. I’m useless to my boss now,” Mario said.

Nikolai gave Ivan a nod. He turned his back just as Ivan placed the blade against Mario’s throat. Mario let out a gurgling noise as Nikolai exited the special cell they used to hold guests. Nikolai had the enormous basement built under his building with this purpose in mind.

As he returned to his apartment, he found Veronica chatting with their wedding planner. Veronica had initially wanted a simple affair for their wedding. Nikolai would want nothing more than to marry her in a small church with only a few chosen guests in attendance. Instead, they opted for a larger wedding as a bold political move. He wanted to let his other rivals see his prize, and to also flaunt the fact that Paolo La Russa had failed. The last member of the Romano Familia still lived.
