I kept my eyes closed, the various senses awakened from his touch, the heat of his breath on my skin. As he fucked me long and hard, growling like a beast, I couldn’t be happier or more sated. I bucked hard against him, meeting every savage thrust, breathless as my pulse raced. Beads of sweat trickled down onto my back, slowly falling to the comforter. There was something cathartic about it.

Maybe we were both damaged in some ways, but together we were on fire.

Within seconds, I could tell he was close to coming. He wrapped his body around mine, holding me around the waist. Every muscle tensing, his breath skipping, he finally released deep inside. He would always be a man who took what he wanted, but only I could provide exactly what he needed.

Love that could withstand every adversity, every difficulty, and bring endless moments of joy.

My hero was right. No one would be able to take that away from us.

CHAPTER17

Maverick

“Wait right here,” I told Amelie, giving her a stern look. “I’m going inside first.”

“It doesn’t look like anything has been disturbed.”

“Looks can be deceiving.”

She nodded, a slight look of apprehension on her face. “I hid the camera in the closet in the bedroom under a pile of my clothes.”

“Okay. If there’s no sign of disturbance, you can come in and grab some things.”

“Maverick. I’m not going to be pushed out of my life. I’m finished with that.” She unfastened her seatbelt, and I grabbed her chin, pinching it between my thumb and forefinger. “Listen to me. Whether Bruno Escavetti was here because of you or for an entirely different reason, it’s entirely possible he learned of your existence anyway. We’re not going to take unnecessary risks. Do you hear me?”

While she gave me the same mischievous smile I’d seen so many times before, I knew she’d participate in risky behavior before all this was over. I’d put a call in to Gage early in the morning, warning him that we were coming to see him. Then I’d given him the information she’d provided for me in order to discover all he could about the two men involved.

The story as well as the ramifications was complicated, unbelievable, and dangerous. The combination could prove to be deadly.

“Yes, sir,” she mused. At least her rebellious nature remained.

I lifted a single eyebrow. “Remember what I said.”

She pulled away, folding her arms and easing against the seat.

“Sam. Don’t let her out.”

Woof!

I grabbed my weapon before opening the door. Her eyes remained on me as I slipped it behind my back under the waistband of my jeans. While she said nothing, I could swear I heard her heart beating a thousand times a minute. She should be nervous. Desperate men did desperate things, especially for money.

With her keys in my hand, I headed for the door, glancing in the window before stepping onto the porch. After unlocking it, I carefully opened the door, moving inside. There were no sounds and upon initial inspection, I could see no signs of visible disturbance. I moved through the small cabin, searching every closet. From what I could tell, no one had been inside. When I returned to the living room, I expected to see her standing in the doorway. At least she’d followed my orders this time.

I motioned for her to come in then headed into the bedroom. Sam bounded in first, immediately jumping on the bed.

“Everything looks fine,” she said as she moved toward the closet. After a few seconds, she pulled the camera into her hand, checking it. “The pictures are here.”

“Do you mind if I take a look?”

She handed it to me then picked up a duffle bag, immediately grabbing a few clothes. I pulled up the photographs, flipping from one to the other. Seeing how many she’d taken of the mountains was incredible. “These are fantastic.”

Half laughing, she shook her head. “Maybe I’ll become a photographer instead.”

“You certainly could make some money, but I think you have your heart set on finishing your education.”

“Why does that sound like if I stay then you’re going to require me to finish veterinary school?”

“First of all, you’re staying. Period. Second, I saw how you were at the sanctuary. You belong working in a facility like that. You’d be happy there.”
