“You can’t change anything. You just want money.”

“No, I want more than that. I want it all. And I’m going to take it all, including you. I can’t wait to enjoy my time with you before you aren’t needed any longer. It’s best you come with me without causing any issues. I will hurt you otherwise.”

“You won’t be able to take me. I’m with someone now. He’ll stop you.”

“Maverick Dane? I don’t think he’s coming to your rescue,” he said, laughing.

“That’s bullshit.” I had to get to the house. I shifted slightly, trying to keep him engaged. If I could get close, I could lock the door and grab the weapon Maverick had left.

“He’s dead, my beautiful bride to be.”

“You’re lying.”

“I’m afraid not, my princess. You see, my associate put two bullets in his brain. He was meeting with the attorney your mother hired. Oh, but he was already dead too.” He laughed and I sucked in my breath.

There was no way. A wave of nausea mixed with fear, my mind fuzzy as ugly visions popped into my mind.

He couldn’t be gone. Not a chance. I’d know it. I’d feel it.

“No. He’s not dead. He’ll come to save me.”

“Tsk. Tsk. There are no heroes in this world, Amelie. Only monsters and madmen. Now, come with me. You don’t want to piss me off.”

When he took a long stride in my direction, I continued backing away. Then I turned, bolting for the door. He was too quick, wrapping his hand around my hair and yanking me to the ground. As I scrambled to try to crawl away, a deep rumbling growl permeated the light breeze.

“Aahh!” My scream was stilted, cut off.

As Giovanni reached for me again, twisting my body, a flash caught my eye as Sam threw himself on top of the monster, his snarls and yelps floating toward the sky. I crawled away then struggled to get to my feet.

Everything shifted into slow motion, Giovanni dropping his gun as he fought with Sam, the pup snarling and slobbering, biting Giovanni’s face and neck. Another rumble occurred as a vehicle roared up the driveway.

Giovanni rammed his fist into Sam’s muzzle, knocking the dog away and grabbing the gun. As he lifted the weapon toward me, I heard another roar.

This time from a hulking mountain man who’d accepted the role of my hero.

The sounds of gunfire seemed muffled in slow motion, but it allowed me to capture the moment that the light left Giovanni’s eyes a split second before he slumped to the ground.

As I slowly dropped to the earth, crawling toward Sam, I heard sirens, tires crunching the gravel.

The moment I covered Sam’s furry body with mine, I felt Maverick’s weight as he wrapped his arms around me. I gasped for air, unable to stop the tears. I pushed hard against the ground, listening for any breath sounds. Then I threw my head back.

“He’s gone. He saved me. No. No. No!”

Maverick

Numb. That was the only word to describe the way I felt.

“What’s the word on Sam?” Phoenix asked as soon as he entered the clinic, Sophie trailing behind him.

I rubbed my eyes, glancing toward the door. “He’s alive. That’s all I know.”

“How long have they been in there?”

“Too long,” Snake answered from across the room.

As I glanced down at Apollo, I thought about the fact it had only been a few days since she’d saved Apollo’s life. But it seemed like a lifetime. “A couple hours.”
