He patted me on the shoulder then leaned against the wall. “I heard what happened. You saved her life.”

“Technically, I think Sam did.”

“That’s because you trained your boy.”

I closed my eyes, tapping the back of my head against the wall. “I almost lost her.”

“But you didn’t. You killed two bad guys instead. Giovanni and one of his henchmen. It’s all over the news. Is Gage handling the situation?”

“Yeah, the Feds are on their way.”

“Don’t worry about that. Just concentrate on taking care of your family, my friend. That’s most important.”

“Yeah, I think you’re right.”

“I’m always right.”

“Same shit, different year,” Snake snarled but I could see a grin on his face.

“Incidentally,” I said, half laughing. “And just out of curiosity. Why do you have a guy tied up outside?”

Phoenix grinned like a kid. “I found the asshole who planted the poison red-handed. I hogtied him to give him a small taste of my kind of revenge. Just going to let him stew until Gage can free up a deputy. If that takes a few hours, a couple days, I don’t care.”

“That might be a while. One of his was gunned down.”

“Shit,” Snake snarled. “You were lucky you didn’t get killed in the process.”

“Nothing was going to stop me from saving Amelie’s life. Not one damn thing.” I stared at the door to the examination room, my chest tightening.

“She’s a special and very tough lady,” Phoenix murmured.

“Yeah, and she suggested the damn thing. She even went on camera for an interview hoping the jerk would roll into town. It was already in motion.”

Snake whistled. “That’s the kind of lady who can handle a brute like you.”

The two men laughed, and I knew in my heart they were right. But her mindset was different. I could feel it in my bones.

Another few minutes of tension passed, my blood still boiling.

“I’m going to ask her to marry me,” I said out of the blue.

Phoenix seemed startled at first. “That’s fantastic, buddy. You are inviting us to the wedding. Right?”

“Hell, no,” I said, the heaviness on my heart causing everything in my body to ache. The exhilaration when I’d pulled the trigger, killing the bastard had given me a temporary high. I wanted to do the same thing to her fucking father.

“Yeah, he will,” Snake said and walked closer, holding out his hand. The man had changed so much since he’d returned. I only hoped my life could be as happy as his. If Sam was lost, it would kill her. There was no doubt.

I shook his hand then stiffened as I heard the door. All three of us tensed and I held my breath.

Both Amelie and Wren returned to the main room, the look of anguish on my baby’s face too much to bear. As she walked closer, there wasn’t one of the three of us who wasn’t holding his breath.

She took me by the hand, pulling me toward the room.

It was to say my last goodbyes. I sensed it.

Anger rushed through me, violent and demanding. As soon as we were near the doorway, she squeezed my hand, rising onto her tiptoes and kissing my cheek.

“He’s going to be just fine.” Her words didn’t register at first until she pushed me through the door.
