“Faith,” he said, “you’re off this case. I’m sorry, but you are. I know you’ve been snooping. I know you went after Jared Greenwood.”

“It’s Steel now.”

“Not the point. The point is that I’ve covered for you, a lot more than you realize. The Boss knows you took our files.”

Faith’s smile faded.

“Yeah,” Clark said. “He knows, and I covered for you. He wanted to have you sit at a desk until you agreed to therapy. I talked him into letting you take the Tucson case instead.”

“I didn’t know that,” she said softly.

“You weren’t meant to,” he said. “I didn’t—” He sighed again, “—Just please stay away. Believe it or not, we all respect you. We all look up to you. Please don’t destroy a legendary—and I do mean that—career over this. It’s not worth it. We’ll get him. Eventually, we get them all.”

“It’s that eventually part that hurts,” Faith said.

“It hurts me too,” he said, “but more people die if the Bureau’s best agent loses her job over a case that’s not hers. Please let this go.”

He left without waiting for a response. He probably knew that he wouldn’t like her response when she gave it.

“Not a chance,” she said to no one.

She got into her car and headed home. She would have to be more careful. She wouldn’t give this up, but she would be more careful. There were things she could do that wouldn’t be as obvious as her previous snooping. She would be more careful, and she would get this guy.

Let’s see how you bleed, little girl.

“You first, little man.”
