“Your dad told you I was in this motel room?”

“Yes. He told me you’re nearby. Sorry, I got into a huge blowout with my friends and told them to let me out. When I called home, Dad told me to come here and that he…”

“He tried calling me.” Freddy raises his phone. “Come, I’ll take you home.”

Thank God Freddy knows how to act quickly. He cut me right off and started to steer the ship. Why is that so fucking hot to me?

Evan scans me suspiciously and also a little creepily. I give him a closed-mouth smile even though I know for certain he’s probably going to check out my ass as I slither past him.

Back outside, Evan says his goodbyes to us.

“We’ll continue our conversation next time!” Evan raises his hands.

“Yes, we need to. I can come to you after I drop Sadie off,” Freddy mutters.

There’s a ripple of tension between them. I could tell whatever they were talking about behind those doors was thick. Evan watches me open Freddy’s door with a sense of familiarity. Or…maybe it’s all in my head.

“You get home and get some beauty rest, Sadie, but it’s not as if you need it, darling.” Evan winks, and I playfully respond with a smirk.

As soon as Freddy closes his door, I know things are about to get serious.

Chapter 16

Freddy

Dressedinblackjeanshorts, a tight white tank top with black bra straps peering out, and painted raspberry lips…what on earth is Sadie up to now? Even though she overstepped her boundaries by showing up to my room, I’m always pleased to set my eyes on her. She’s a bright, bubbly light in this crappy world, and I needed to get Evan out of my living space. I could share with Sadie how much anger I’ve refrained from displaying while talking to Evan, but my issues aren’t as dire as hers. Something big must be happening for her to pop up at my door.

“You can stop the drunk act because I see you’re sober.”

She shakes her head, then twists a piece of her hair around her finger tightly.

“What’s going on?” I pry. “Where did you walk here from? Or did someone drop you off?”

I try my best to draw the fastest conclusion I can. I wouldn’t mind hearing her say how much she wishes things were different with us. But my common sense, and with everything else I have going on, I know it’s best if she doesn’t say that.

“Of course, I’m not drunk. Emily was being a bully when I was out with her and Linda.”

“Close by?”

“Yes, at the Waffle House. That’s why I came here. I didn’t drive and had no idea what else to do. But when I saw you had company, it made me think twice about coming here. I apologize for the inconvenience, but I am not feeling my best. I don’t know what’s wrong and probably should get a doctor’s appointment…but I think it’s just getting used to this new job and all.”

“What’s wrong, Sadie?”

I start up the truck. I’m in no rush to pull out of the lot, but I feel compelled while Evan is around. The last thing I need is for him to sniff us out.

“I think my body is getting used to double shifts. I’ve been really drained lately.”

I briefly check her out, and, as usual, she’s incredibly hot and doesn’t look a bit sick to me.

“You stopping by unannounced wasn’t the best choice. You could’ve called, and I would’ve been there in a flash. Kicked Evan right out and everything.”

“Really? I mean, thanks, Freddy.”

“So why didn’t you call me?” I pull off, driving slower than usual.

“Oh, I don’t know. I wanted to see your face, and I wasn’t sure if you would come and—”

“Got it. You wanted to see my face.” I blush.
