“I have to stop doing this.” I take a huge gulp of water.

“Doing what?”

“Matchmaking. God, I need another drink.”

I make eye contact with our tatted-up bartender, and he gives me a smile and a nod.

“Make that two, please!” Patty says. “Meadow, you can’t stop making happily ever afters for people. You just need to make room to find yourown!”

“No…I…I need room to just chill first. Once the craze of this first month simmers, I’m booking a trip to Fiji immediately. Mark my words.”

“Yes, a vacation you’ve most certainly earned. But I would argue, Ms. Meadow Meyers, that you need to get more than just your feet wet.” Patty bats her curly fake lashes at me, her sharp green eyes sparkling with charm.

“Oh, please. I’m not trying to one-night-stand it with a Jason Momoa wannabe under some tropical waterfall, even though that sounds pretty great!” I shrug. “No, Patty. What I need is a deep-tissue massage and to be steeped in a steam room for an entire week.AndI crave a fantastic view of the Pacific Ocean, which is so much cleaner than the Atlantic.”

“Oh, thank you!” Patty turns for her drink.

I immediately toss two dainty straws out of my tonic and goose.

“You know you can have both. Be a little selfish! Why not, Meadow? You’ve dotted all of your I’s and crossed your T’s. You’re a homeowner…and you’re knocking on thirty. Now’s the time. Especially since you want a big family.”

“Wanted. My career is my family. And…some of us are here to, um, make happily ever afters for others. Like the lovely wedding we just came from. I mean,I did that.I paired Donna and Louis together.”

“Meadow, this was your twelfth wedding altogether!”

“I know. It’s a superpower!” I laugh.

“And let me guess: superheroes can’t have it all?”

“Exactly!” I raise my drink.

“You don’t believe there’s anyone out there for you?”

“I’m not saying that. I’m just saying I need to rest. You have to be tired, too, right? All the work we’ve been doing on the app hasn’t caught up to you?”

Patty gives me a death stare.

“You ask me that several times a week, Meadow. My twenty-three-year-old mind is doing just fine.”

“Okay, you’re right. I’m the only one getting old here.”

“Twenty-nine is not old, Meadow! The phenomenal dating app, Roleplé, designed by the hottest matchmaker in the entire Philadelphia area, Meadow Meyers, is for ages eighteen to seventy-five. You’re literally on the baby side of your own app. I think it may be time you try it out, as that’s what you’ve said you’d do as soon as we started working on it.” Patty finishes off her martini and picks up her phone.

I know what she’s doing. Logging into Roleplé to show me all of my potentials.

We’ve been working on Roleplé for over two years. I told myself if I didn’t have a boyfriend by the time it was launched, which was last week, I’d use it to meet someone. So here we are. Patty may be young, but she is a wise woman when it comes to keeping promises. She’s the consistent one, as I can be a little here and there. I’m awesome in the idea department and a bit in the initiating area, but when it comes to the follow-through, I’m not shy to admit, I need a team to support me.

“I literally have an avatar already created for you!”

“Shut up!” I gasp as Patty slides her work phone across the table to me.

There I am in avatar form.

“Brunette with a splash of cinnamon.” Patty points to my avatar’s hair which is precisely cut and styled into the edgy bob I got last week.

“Did you sneak a picture of me today or what?”

“I screenshot your Instagram photo from last week. Isn’t she hot?”
