“Yeah, mostly. Had some porn in here too at one point, but Kristy threw it away. She was horrified when she found it.”
Our eyes meet and our lips turn up because, yes, I can imagine that.
“So what do we do now?” I ask as I lean back and wipe myself clean.
“Just wait until the wind dies down and then check out the damage?”
“Your family okay?” I ask, and he shrugs.
“I’m sure they are. I’m not even sure which way the tornado went. In town, there are tornado sirens. Everyone knows what to do when that happens.”
I sit up, dropping the tissue onto the floor, still completely naked, and move toward him. My arms wrap around him, and he pulls me into a hug.
“That was so fucking scary,” I murmur, and he nods against the top of my head.
“I’m sorry I ran off, but I had to make sure they were okay. They get so spooked.”
I hold him tighter, just breathing in his scent, and we stay that way for what feels like hours.
CHAPTERFOURTEEN
Bennet
When we finally make our way out of the house, I’m relieved to find that nothing on our property was damaged. A few things had been knocked over, but it seems the tornado took a path away from our house. I’ve seen some tornados that have torn fences down as they’ve approached, ripping out trees. I’m glad my mom won’t have to deal with any property damage once she returns home. That’s one thing she just doesn’t need to worry about. She needs to focus on her recovery.
“Did you find Cluck and Winnie?” Jasper asks me, looking around worriedly, his hand clasped tightly in mine. I’d laugh and call him on totally being overly attached to the animals, but I know that this had to be traumatic for him. Never having experienced a tornado before would be kind of scary. I have to remember that to him, it’s not just a light breeze.
“I did. They found shelter in the barn. Animals are smart. They go with their instincts.”
He tugs on his bottom lip with his teeth, those eyes slamming into mine. “Yes, well they are certainly smarter than some humans I know. I mean, honestly, rushing out into that. And if animals have all those instincts—” I pull him to me, cutting off his little furious tirade with my lips on his.
He doesn’t fight me this time. His lithe body melts into mine and I swear I feel him sigh into my mouth from relief. Relief that I’m okay. That Winnie and Cluck are fine. That the house is still standing. He’s cracked wide open now. I want to slide inside and stay there. I like him needy.
I nip at his mouth a couple of times, pulling back from the kiss as I look down into his eyes. “It’s okay. We made it.”
He stiffens his back at that, clearing his throat. “Yes. That we did.” He places a hand on my chest, his fingers curling into me for just a moment before he takes a step back, like he needs the space. But I’m tired of that. I’m tired of pretending like we don’t want each other, so I don’t let him go too far. My hand rests on his lower back, and I step closer to him.
“Well, don’t ever do that again,” Jasper adds as he leans into me again.
I grin at him. “I like you all worried about me. I can’t lie.”
He rolls his eyes at me, but I swear it’s affectionate. “That’s because you’re a tornado-loving asshole. If you suggest storm chasing, I will riot. I am not doing that.”
I chuckle at that, wanting to assure him I’ve only done that once, but before I can, my phone beeps and I pull it out of my damn pocket to see who is messaging. I doubt it’s any of my family just yet. Although I’m sure they’ll send a check-in text later.
Hell, I’m glad to see my phone is still working despite being caught in the downpour. It was really coming down out there. I should probably change my clothes when I get a chance. Now that the wind has died down and the rain has stopped, it’s just cold.
My face splits into a grin when I see who’s texted me. It’s the group chat I have going with some of the other camboys.
Carter:
Are you two okay? I swear to god, if you blew away in a goddamn tornado, I will lose it.
Damon:
You’re just worried about the site.
