“Reed told me so, and I didn’t believe him, but my man is always right, huh?” he says and nuzzles up to Reed, who just wraps his arm around Carter. We walk off toward the field where the cows are grazing, and I wonder what the hell Jasper and I are going to do once we get back to California.

I hope that it’s easy, that he will admit how he feels, but for some reason, I don’t think it will be that easy. I think it might take some work.

But hell, he’s worth it.

I stare at Jasper and Damon and feel my heart thump excitedly in my chest. And when Jasper peers back at me over his shoulder, I know that this is something I want.

I really fucking want him.

I’m gonna figure out a way to make this work between us while still being here to help my mom.

I have to. I can’t imagine going back to the way we were before, when I didn’t get to touch him every day. Talk to him. Hell, I look forward to his sass. I know he wants it too. I can feel it, but I also know Jasper. He’s stubborn as fuck.

“You introducing Damon to your new best friend?” I ask Jasper, and he eyes me.

“I just thought they’d like to meet each other,” he says. “They both have the same eyelashes.”

Damon snorts, and my grin widens. “Yeah, is that why? You’re into cow eyelashes now?”

“Yep!” Jasper pops the P and then blushes crimson. “Oh, shut up. I like the fucking cow. Sue me!”

I pull him into me because I can’t help it. He’s so fucking cute.

“Not a word,” he hisses, and I press a kiss to the side of his head.

We all pat Winnie and she moos loudly, making Damon scream.

Then we all walk back to the house and help Bridgette clean and tidy up before heading back outside for an early afternoon bonfire. Haven’t done this yet with all the shit going on, but I figure now is as good a time as ever.

“I invited Jimbob and Ryan,” I say, and Jasper nods.

“Fine, but just know that you’re asking for trouble. Damon is gonna be all over both of them.”

“Ryan seems like he can handle himself.”

“If Jimbob shows up with that pig, Damon won’t survive it.”

And Jasper is mostly correct. As soon as Jimbob arrives in all of his overall-wearing glory, with the baby pig in his arms and Ryan striding next to him, Damon places the back of his hand to his forehead and swoons.

I lean over and make sure he doesn’t fall into the fire.

“Lord, who is that man?” Damon says, and Jasper snorts.

“He’s not for you.”

“Who says? You’re not my mother.”

“Like you’d do what your mother says anyways. You hate her,” I say, and Damon shrugs, ignoring me and sashaying over to Jimbob who isn’t quite sure what to make of all these visitors. So, I stand up and move toward him, introducing him and Ryan to the guys.

They actually hit it off, Reed reaching out and gently petting the mini pig’s head.

“Hannah would love one of these,” he says, and I have a feeling Carter is already planning to purchase one for Hannah when they get home.

“Pretty cute, huh?” Jimbob says as Damon sidles over to his side and bats his eyelashes right at him. Huh, he kind of does look like Winnie when he does that. Jasper was onto something earlier. Maybe they really were comparing eyelashes for a moment.

“Yeah,” Reed says, and then Ryan leans toward the flames, holding out his hands.

“So, what are we gonna burn tonight? Not just wood, right? We’re gonna put something weird in the fire?”
