“Like what?” Lorenzo asked.

Shit. I didn’t have an answer to that because it wasn’t completely true. I didn’t know what I wanted, exactly.

Anna joined us, and I was relieved.

“Hi,” she said. “Your show was really good.”

“Thanks,” Lorenzo said with a grin, genuinely happy about the compliment even though he knew he’d hit it out of the park. “The event is stunning.”

“Thanks,” Anna said with a blush that made her look genuinely happy about the compliment, too. Even though she knew just the same that she was damn good at what she did.

“Are you still in for next week?” Lorenzo asked.

“Of course, I wouldn’t miss it for the world.”

I frowned. “What’s happening next week?”

“Oh,” Anna said, “didn’t I tell you? We’re going camping.”

I raised my eyebrows. “Camping.”

“It’s a tradition,” Lorenzo said. “We do it every year. It’s always good to leave the rat race behind and reconnect with nature, living off the land, subjecting ourselves to the core of who we are. It’s a nice reminder that we’re not everything money makes us out to be.”

“It sounds ridiculous,” I snorted. “Why would you live out in the dirt? I know who I am.”

Lorenzo laughed, and Anna looked amused, too.

“You should try it,” Anna said. “It teaches you things about yourself.”

“I know enough about who I am, thank you,” I said. “I don’t need a lesson from Mother Nature.”

Lorenzo shrugged and opened his mouth, but before he could respond, the hostess came to him, demanding his attention. He excused himself and turned away.

“I knew you’d hit it off with him,” Anna said, pleased that I was talking to Lorenzo.

“I wouldn’t say that,” I said.

“Why not? You two seem to get along so well. Isn’t he interested?”

“Well, heis,” I said. “He wants to take me out.”

“What’s the problem, then?” Anna asked, surprised.

I shrugged. “I don’t know. I just don’t see us working out. He lives here in Cali and I’m all the way up there in Washington and we want different things out of life.”

“Like what?”

“I’m just not looking to get serious.”

“Is he?” Anna asked.

The truth was, I didn’t know what Lorenzo wanted. I was too busy keeping him at arm’s length to get to that point. Maybe he wanted more, maybe he didn’t. Whatever it was, it wasn’t what I wanted, and now that Anna—probably Lexi, too—wanted me to go for him, I wanted it even less.

Did I have an issue? Maybe. I just didn’t like being told what to do.

“Do you want to know what I think?” Anna asked.

“I’m sure you’re going to tell me either way.”
