Anna didn’t look like she knew what to make of my reply, but she powered on. Kudos to her—when I was a bitch, some people turned around and walked away. I still tried to decide if those that didn’t were brave or just stupid.

“I think you have nothing to lose.”

I blinked at Anna. “How do you figure that?”

“Well, it’s not like you’re looking for anything serious, so no matter which way you go, you’ll get it.”

“You’re very wise,” I said, rolling my eyes.

Anna chuckled. “I’ve been told.”

“I was being sarcastic.”

“I know.” She smiled sweetly. “I’m just ignoring it. I’m going to do the last couple of things. Do you think you can manage another couple of minutes on your own without estranging all your suitors?”

I laughed at that. “Honey, estranging suitors—especially those my dad picks for me—is my strong suit.”

“Everyone has their talents,” Anna said with a wink before she walked off.

I shook my head but I was smiling. I liked Anna because she didn’t take my shit, she made it off as a joke and kept being nice to me. There weren’t a lot of people in my life able to do that; it was a skill that only a few possessed. I respected that skill. I made myself as difficult as possible to deal with. If someone could handle it, then they deserved to stay.

I glanced around. When my eyes fell on Lorenzo, talking to another woman with his debonair smile, it was clear that she was ready for him to take her to bed.

I turned around and left the building. I wasn’t about to let myself get jealous—that would suggest I cared—and there was nothing else here for me. Home it would be so that I could sleep off the wine headache I would inevitably get and forget about why I bothered to come tonight in the first place.

LORENZO

WhenIturnedaround, finally escaping the claws of one of Orange County’s most eligible bachelorettes, Celine was gone.

“Where is she?” I asked Anna.

Anna looked around with a frown.

“I don’t know. I left her over there to take care of business.”

I shook my head. “How does she keep slipping through my fingers?”

“That sounds like a you-problem.” Anna sniffed. “I made the effort to get her here for you, the rest isn’t my job.”

I groaned. I’d asked Anna to help me figure out a way to get in contact with Celine again since she knew Lexi Conrad, who was Ava Forger’s friend, who was Celine’s sister-in-law. It was a hell of a grapevine to work through, but Anna had delivered in spectacular fashion, as she was wont to do… only for Celine to have disappeared on me yet again.

She was like a fish.

A sexy fish.

What the fuck was I saying?

A mermaid.

Whatever.

I hurried out of the house, hoping Celine wasn’t gone yet. She stood on the curb, checking her phone, probably waiting for her car. The phone’s dim light lit up her angelic face, her blonde hair hanging over her shoulders, and fucked if she wasn’t a vision.

“I wasn’t ready to leave yet, but if you want to go, we can go,” I said, walking to her.

She looked up at me, her face serious.
