I don’t know where to go though. This is my only job right now. I’ll have to find a new job but it will have to wait until my next day off.

The next day, I spend as little time around Ris as possible, including trading with one of the girls to swap cleaning the stage after the performance for helping Ris get ready.

Ris tries to find me but I make myself scarce. I don’t think I can say anything to him without possibly bursting into tears or panicking and running away so it’s best to avoid him as much as possible right now.

At least Rhovier looks pleased that I’m avoiding him. She gives me a satisfied smirk whenever she sees me scurrying away from Ris and crosses her arms and stands guard near his door as though she thinks I’m going to break it down to tell him.

She doesn’t have to worry about that though. I won’t interfere with the precious musician and his precious career. Thankfully once his set is done, I’m actually done for the day as well so I start heading out the back door, hoping he won’t have time to corner me.

It’s not Ris that corners me though. It’s Cyra. She stops me with one hand on the door and narrows her gaze. “I need to talk to you,” Cyra says.

“I’m heading out. Can it wait?” I ask, chewing my lip.

“I heard the rumors.” Cyra glances down at my belly, which is thankfully mostly hidden under my dress but I realize that she must know. “Are they true?”

I breathe in and out quickly, feeling my blood spiking. “Please don’t tell anyone,” I beg her.

“Well. I won’t but from the looks of it, I won’t have to say a word soon,” Cyra points out. I cover my belly with my arms, tightening my coat around it as tears prick at my eyes.

“I don’t know what to do,” I whisper, hanging my head.

“Me neither, but...I might know someone who can. There’s this other waitress, Daphne, you know her?”

I nod. I’ve seen Daphne around. She’s pretty.

“She helps this woman who works in the lowtowns. The woman runs a daycare and that woman might be able to help. You ought to ask at least. I’m your friend but we both know how dangerous this is. You shouldn’t have gotten yourself into this situation,” Cyra scolds me. “But I’m here for you as much as I can be.”

“Thank you,” I say, tears in my eyes.

“Tomorrow, Daphne will be here,” Cyra says. “I’ll bring her to you after your shift and you can talk to her.”

“I appreciate all the help,” I tell her. I head out before Ris has time to look for me and head home.

Oddly, now that I know I’m pregnant, my morning sickness has started to abate. It’s only been about a week since I went to the healer but it makes sense. I’m coming out of the first trimester, which means I won’t be as sick anymore, according to Darla.

Heading home, I get something to eat, craving more fish and eggs again. I’ve only wanted brown oats in the morning and fish and eggs for dinner every night so far. It’s been a strange experience.

After dinner, I crawl into bed, relieved to have a friend like Cyra. I’m so glad that I have a chance to get out of here without risking everything.

The next day, when I come to work I find out that Ris has his first evening shift that night. I won’t be working with him at all today.

It’s quite the load off my shoulders. I feel like I can breathe easier without him searching me out all evening or having Rhovier hovering menacingly in the background. As promised, Cyra grabs Daphne for me so we can speak.

“Thank you for this,” I tell the woman. She nods, understanding.

“So she moved,” Daphne explains. “She doesn’t live in the lowtowns anymore. She’s got a place near the edge of the shop district. The dark elf she nannies for, he’s loaded and moved her there for “safety” reasons,” she jokes.

“So where do I find her?” I ask.

“She’s at this address,” Daphne says, handing me a scrap of paper with a hastily written address on it. “Go and ask for Lucy. She’ll be able to help you.”

I’m done already for the day since I came in early so I can leave now and find her. Just as I’m about to go though, I spot Ris coming into the club with his cases.

Our eyes lock and time seems to freeze. Before he can make his way over to me though, I thank Daphne and Cyra and scurry out the door.

There’s only one thing to do right now, I guess. Ris comes to the door of the club and calls out my name but I don’t even glance back before disappearing around an alley and heading away, towards the shops district.

I hope this Lucy person can help me. I don’t know what kind of help she can offer but I just know that I need to find something else to do before everything goes to Glacies in a handbasket in my life.
