I pull over to the side of the road so I can look my youngest brother in his eyes. “I know you don’t like that Hypnos left us alone with our father. You feel betrayed because he promised he’d never leave us. It feels like he did, and I still deal with our father over it every day. But he’s family and we never leave family behind.”

Ayres looks at me, his eyes pooling with unshed tears, and I feel gutted. Fuck, I hope I’m not lying through my teeth. Hypnos swore he would do the day-to-day business with me once he’s back home. As long as he’s able to continue with the computer shit.

Hypnos’s apartment complex is a fucking dump. I look at the area and close my eyes. Why is my brother living here? Ayres makes a noise and I look over at him. His mouth is wide open and he’s blinking.

Out of the window, I see a man on his knees with a woman held to him. She’s not naked but I can see him pushing into her.

“We are fucking rich, and he lives here?” Ayres growls and I feel those words deep within me. Holy fuck, this doesn’t make sense. It feels wrong that Hypnos is here in the slums. If I would’ve had to guess, he’d be in a townhome with a basement with a huge computer setup. Not this.

Sighing, I drive as fast as possible around the curb without being a danger to the people walking in the street. “Father wouldn’t pay for his college, so I'm sure this is all he could afford.”

Now that’s a lie. Hypnos has been making money off computer games since he was twelve years old. He’s probably more rich than our father at this point.

We drive in silence around the complex, looking for building seven. By the time we get to the third building, my hackles are up, and my stomach feels tight. I sense we are being watched. That’s never a good thing. It may be my paranoia setting in, but nonetheless, I feel like we are in a bad situation.

Ayres looks worried as he gets out of the car. “Fuck, everyone here is packing. My bat isn’t going to do a damn thing in a fight.”

“Keep your mouth shut and your head down, Ayres.”

I warn him because I can’t have him causing bloodshed today. We aren’t here for that.

“Yeah, I got it, no crazy shit.” Ayres sounds irritated as we walk up the front steps.

Checking my gun, I nod to myself as I step inside the building. Sweat pours down my back, and I want to complain about how hot it is here.

“Why can’t we ever have a fucking white Christmas?” Ayers takes the words right out of my mouth. “We could have been in Colorado with our father if it weren’t for Hypnos.”

“Stop complaining. Every time we are with our father, he’s an ass to us. Be happy you have us as your backup and brothers.” Sometimes I want to beat the ever-loving shit out of Ayres.

Besides, I don’t want to be anywhere near father when he finds out his precious new wife has been committing fraud under his name. Although, the look of shock on his face when one of his men brings him the evidence would put a smile on my face.

I shake the damn thought out of my mind and make my way up the last set of stairs. Ignoring all the surrounding chatter, I focus on getting Hypnos and leaving this place in flames. It’s a cesspool for diseases, that’s for sure. The walls are filthy. There are splotches of blood all over the floor.

Ayres stumbles over the ripped carpet, and I grab him. “Don’t touch anything. Who knows what kind of shit this place houses?”

“Yeah, no kidding. Fuck, we gotta get outta here as soon as we get Hypnos.”

“I couldn’t agree with you more.”

We get to Hypnos’s door and hear the music blaring. Ayres chuckles and I frown. How could anyone hear a threat coming with this loud racket?

“Don’t you fucking dare say a word to Hypnos about all of this. I mean it, Ayres.” I sternly hold his arm and he glares at me.

“You’re always so damn serious,” he grumbles, but he doesn’t continue to laugh.

“Well, me being serious keeps your asses out of trouble,” I retort as I bend down in front of the door and pick the lock. There’s no way anyone could hear a knock on the door over the loud bass thumping.

The door swings open slowly, and Ayres walks through. I follow him inside and shut the door. Music blares from inside to the point it hurts my ears. Gun out, I’m prepared for something ominous to be happening.

“Goddamn, your pussy is so tight.” Ayres looks back at me with a confused look on his face. I shrug and head toward the bedroom.

“Holy shit.” Ayres's breath blows out as we look at Haydes fucking a girl’s mouth as Hypnos plows into her pussy. The girl is struggling, but the two of them have her in a fast hold. She’s not going anywhere.

Hypnos looks at us and smiles. Holy fuck, he’s smiling. When he’s home, that smile is so rare; I’ve been afraid that the frown he always sports would be permanent.

“Come join us. Shelby, my fucking whore of a neighbor, won’t mind some more dick in her.”

His eyes belie that smile. Hell, it contradicts the act he is committing. There’s no pleasure or playfulness there. Dead. Cold. Fuck, it’s like looking in the damn mirror. I wonder what the girl did to earn the wrath of Hypnos. He doesn’t lose his cool often. Nor does he retaliate until he’s had enough of someone’s bullshit.
