“You don’t have that with you now?” I ask.

“We didn’t know we were hiring on the spot,” Julian says. “So we’re a little unprepared.”

“Guess some things never change,” I mutter.

“We’re hiring a nanny, not a road manager,” Terry says.

“Great,” I tell him. “Then I will wait for your call.”

“Fantastic.”

“See you soon.”

“Later.”

I turn on my heel and walk out of the little office. I don’t know what to say or how to digest this. All I can think is that this has to be some cruel twist of fate. I haven’t been the best person in the world, but I’m far from a bad person, so I don’t know why Karma has it out for me.

I don’t even take the time to look at the baby, either.

I’m sure he’s got their looks on some level, which means I’m going to be taking care of someone who reminds me of the three men who have made my life hell.

I don’t know how I’m going to do this.

But, I don’t have much choice. I need money.

And I need it now.

FIVE

TERRY

“He’s eating! I think I’m getting the hang of this!” Julian calls out from the couch.

“Do you want a fucking award?” Caleb asks. “Why don’t you try getting up in the middle of the night to do what you’re doing now? Throw in a shitty diaper on top of it.”

“Oh, come on. You know Terry’s got night duty tonight, so I don’t know what you’re bitching about,” Julian says with a grin.

“Why the fuck do I have to have night duty tonight?” I whine. “You should take it. You’re next in line, after all.”

“Doesn’t work that way,” Julian says. “I’m older than you, so you have to do what I say.”

“But you’re the kid’s dad,” I tell him.

“Thought you were,” he shoots back.

“Would you two shut the fuck up for a minute? I’m trying to hear the game,” Caleb snaps from where he’s standing in front of the TV. “For what we pay for this room, you’d think we’d get better TV.”

“Why not just watch it on your phone?” Julian asks. “You can put in your earbuds too and tune us all out.”

“Just keep your voice down, it’s not that hard,” Caleb says.

“Lana!” I suddenly break into the conversation. “I bet you anything the baby is Lana’s! You remember that redhead from Texas?”

“There is no way in hell this kid’s mom has red hair. Look at how dark his skin and his hair is. No pale-ass redhead made this, let me tell you,” Julian argues. “I don’t think any of our genes are strong enough to be able to combat that level of pale.”

“That’s fair,” I give in.

“I was looking at him last night, and you know who he really reminds me of?” Caleb asks.
