Jeanette moans, and that only serves to turn me on more.

I know we have fifteen minutes to enjoy each other, but it’s not going to take even that long.

Not with someone as sexy as Jeanette.

Not when she’s everything we have ever wanted.

TWENTY

JEANETTE

Istand backstage with Hendrix in my arms, watching the triplets finish up with their set.

It isn’t the biggest venue on the tour by any means, but it’s still a sold-out show, and the crowd is going wild. I can’t even express how amazing it is to watch them performing together like this.

“You see that? They’re your daddies, you know that? Someday I bet you anything you’re going to be able to go out there and play with them. What are you going to play, huh? Are you going to be a drummer, or are you going to be a guitarist?” I ask Hendrix as I rock him back and forth.

He generally seems to enjoy the music in the shows, though I do put earplugs in for him. I don’t want him to have any kind of hearing damage from being around the loud music all the time. But he does seem to enjoy listening to the beat of the songs, and he likes to dance along with them by kicking his legs and waving his arms around.

“I bet you’re going to have all the fans, aren’t you?” I ask him. “You’re not going to have any trouble finding friends or anything with your daddies being who they are. I have no doubt about that.”

He wiggles more, and I smile. I have fallen in love with not only the triplets, but with Hendrix too. I can’t imagine my life without him, and I hope the triplets mean it when they tell me that they want to have me in their lives forever.

It’s so hard for me to push past the doubts that come with the memory of what happened before. I know there was a lot more to the story than them just choosing to walk out on me one day, but my brain isn’t letting me let go of that entirely. I still feel like there’s a chance for them to do it again, and I hate that.

Especially with the idea of Clarissa being back in the picture.

I look out at the screaming crowd. I’m not sure if she’s here, but I can’t help but wonder. There’s a chance that she could be at any of these shows. The triplets only made a point of telling security not to let her or anyone else backstage. They didn’t say that there was anyone banned from attending their shows.

“Even if she is here, she’s not going to get anywhere near you, I will make sure of that myself if I have to,” I promise Hendrix.

He wiggles in my arms more, happy to have me talking to him. He’s such a good little baby, I can’t imagine anyone giving him up for any reason, and it pisses me off to think that someone did. I’m horrified with the way some other woman treated him like he was disposable, just dropping him off as though he wasn’t anything to her.

“And for our final number, we’d like to play for you our newest addition to our playlist!” Julian says into the microphone. The crowd goes wild at this announcement, and I yell too, though not loud enough to bother Hendrix. I’m not sure what they’re going to play. I’m sure I’ve heard all of their songs, and besides telling me they were going to work on new material, I haven’t heard anything new.

“We call this song ‘Without You,’ and we would love to dedicate it to someone very important in our lives,” Julian tells the audience. “I’m not going to speak this person’s name, as we haven’t told her about this song and we wanted to surprise her with it just as much as we’re surprising you. That’s right, I’m telling you all right now that this is the very first time anyone outside of the three of us have heard this track, and I can’t wait to have it out there for you to enjoy.”

My heart leaps to my throat as he speaks, and at first my brain tells me that they must have written a song for Hendrix’s mother. I don’t know why I think that’s the direction they’ve gone, but it’s tough not to jump to conclusions with how uneasy I am about her.

Besides, she’s the one who made Hendrix.

They will all readily admit that Hendrix is the best thing to ever happen to them, so of course the woman who made him would be important to them too, right?

“This song goes out to a woman we have known since we were kids, really. A bunch of teenage punks without any real direction in life. Of course, as it does, life gets in the way, and we had to say goodbye to this person for almost a decade. But wouldn’t you know? Life also has a way of bringing people who were meant to be together back together, and just a short while ago she came back into our lives. We all agree it was pure chance, it was pure happenstance, and most of all it was completely fate that brought us back together, and we are determined now to stay together,” Julian says.

The crowd remains transfixed on him as he speaks, and I have a lump forming in my throat. There’s no way now to deny that he’s talking about me. I’m the only one who fits that description, and the fact that he’s so bold in talking about me to the crowd makes me feel on top of the world.

“The day is coming when you will know her name, but for now, we’re going to relish keeping that to ourselves. But what you do want to hear is this song, so let’s get it out there. Ready, boys?” Julian shouts into the microphone as he and his brothers get pumped up for their debut of the song, and I have to remind myself that I’m holding Hendrix and can’t jump along with the rest of them.

Caleb starts with the beat on the drums, and Terry joins in with his bass. Julian seems to practically scream the lyrics as he sings, but the beat of Caleb’s drums matches my pounding heart.

Hendrix, for his own part, is laughing and clapping along with the music. Of course, he’s far too young to have any kind of beat or rhythm, but that doesn’t matter. With how happy and wiggly he is, I know he’s enjoying the music.

He’s got so much of his dads in him, it makes my heart swell.

“It doesn’t matter where you came from, does it?” I ask him. “You’re just like your dads, and that’s what matters. You can take after them all you want, and you’re going to turn out just fine.”

He gurgles and wiggles in my arms again, and I hold him close.
