“I hope so. He passed when I was in college.” Before she can respond, I head for the door. “We should eat.”

I like having Twyla around. I enjoy her company. But I don’t want our evening to take on a sour note by talking about my dad and the past.

Twyla

Ihang up the phone with a sigh. I still can’t find a no-kill shelter to take Zeus off Chase’s hands, and so far, the advertisement I put on the local pet finder site has only turned up a bunch of weirdos I would never allow to adopt Zeus.

I’m afraid that if I don’t find somewhere for him to live soon, my little feline friend will wear out his welcome and Chase will get rid of him. Though something tells me he’s not heartless, just has that gruff exterior.

My phone dings in my hand and I see a text from Bryce.

Bryce: Tell your cranky doorman to let us up. We come bearing wine.

I chuckle and type a response.

Me: Good wine or the cheap stuff?

Bryce: Does it matter?

Me: Good point. I’ll call down now.

I call down and ask the concierge to let up Bryce and whoever she’s with. This visit is unexpected but pleasant. I wasn’t looking forward to an evening in on my own. I came to San Francisco specifically because I knew some people here, but so far, I’ve been sheltering myself away.

A couple of minutes later, I answer the knock on my door to find Bryce and Violet.

“Where’s Shayna?” I step back to let them in the condo.

“She has to fly out for their game tomorrow, so she’s MIA tonight.”

I close the door and lead them into the kitchen to round up some wineglasses.

“But we’re here because even though you’re in town, you’ve been suspiciously quiet. We’re worried.” Bryce sets two bottles of wine on the counter.

“You guys don’t need to worry about me.” I find the wineglasses in one of the cupboards and set three on the counter, then grab the wine opener I saw in the cutlery drawer.

“I know how hard it can be to end an engagement,” Violet says. She called off her nuptials with her ex after she found out he’d been cheating. And then she got together with Brady Banks, the best wide receiver in the league.

“It’s certainly not for the faint of heart.” I hand the wine opener to Bryce.

“I had my good days and my bad days. When we hadn’t heard from you since the gala, we figured it was time for a girls’ night,” Violet says.

“And we’re nosy and wanted to see what your place is like.” Bryce pulls the cork from the wine bottle, then looks around. “Nice digs by the way.”

I slide the wineglasses across the counter to her. “It’s not my style, but there’re certainly worse places.”

“Sure beats my apartment.” Bryce finishes pouring us each a glass of wine then lifts her glass for a toast. “To fresh starts. May they bring happy surprises.”

We all clink and sip from our glasses.

“Let’s go to the living room.” I lead them into the room, and we all sit down.

Kiwi comes in to check out the new additions, and after a few minutes of the girls fawning over her, she settles in her cat bed in the corner.

I sip my wine and look at Violet. “I didn’t get a chance to ask at the gala, but what are you doing about work now that you’re living with Brady?”

Violet works as a nanny to high-end clients. In fact, she and Brady started up when she was a live-in nanny for his six-year-old son, Theo. Of course, they’d had an anonymous one-night stand previous to that, so that didn’t hurt.
