“I think I’m considered a kept woman now.” She frowns.

Bryce leans back on the couch. “That sounds ideal to me.”

Violet and I laugh.

“I’m not going to go live in someone else’s house and help to raise their children when we have Theo, so I put in my notice. For the moment, I’m volunteering at Theo’s school—helping with lunchroom supervision and in the classroom. It’s nice to spend extra time with him and see him interact with all his classmates.”

I longingly think back to my students. I miss teaching, but I know I made the right call coming out here to get distance from my life.

“But… that’s kind of related to some other news I have to share,” Violet says with a big grin and flips her long, dark hair behind her shoulder.

“Oooh, do tell.” Bryce waggles her eyebrows.

“Brady and I talked at the gala about how eager we are to start our lives together and decided that we’re going to try for a baby right away.”

My mouth drops open. “Oh my gosh, that’s awesome.” I ignore the pinprick of jealousy in my heart. I had hoped to be making similar plans in the not-too-distant future with Mathew.

“Wow. Congrats,” Bryce says. “What about the wedding?”

“We’re going to get married as soon as the season is over. I don’t want anything huge anyway, so it shouldn’t take too much to plan it.”

“That’s really exciting. Congratulations.” I smile, happy that she and Brady were able to sort out their issues and begin a life together.

“Thanks. Who knows how long it could take, right? So we figured we might as well get started on the fun part—trying.”

We all dissolve into a fit of giggles like middle schoolers.

“God, don’t remind me of what I’m missing.” I groan and take another sip of wine.

“Need I remind you that you don’t have to be missing anything? You’re single now. You can do whatever you want.” Bryce’s eyes widen. “You should be out at the clubs.”

I sigh. “I know. I’ve just always been a relationship kinda girl, you know? I’ve never hooked up with anyone I wasn’t already in a relationship with.”

“Jesus, girl, we gotta get you out more.” Bryce shakes her head.

“I don’t know if I could do it. I miss sex, that’s for sure. But when it comes down to it, I don’t know if I could sleep with a man knowing there’s no future for us.”

“Are you ready to get into another relationship?” Violet asks.

I shake my head. “No. Not yet.”

Bryce shrugs. “Then it’s the perfect time to hook up with someone.”

She has a point, I guess.

I hem and haw, moving my head from side to side. “I don’t know.”

“You need to get out there though. Your rebound bang isn’t just going to knock on your door.” Bryce stands and refills her glass before walking over to us to refill ours as well.

A knock lands on the door as she puts the bottle down. All our eyes widen.

“Or is he?” Violet asks in a creepy voice.

I get up off the couch and head to the front door. I look through the peephole and my stomach flip-flops when I see Chase.

Pressing a hand to my belly, I open the door. “Hey.”

“Hey,” he says kind of shyly, as though he’s nervous or something. “Wondered if you wanted to watch an episode ofAmerican Horror Story.” He rubs his hand over the back of his neck and his gaze flits away from me and down to the floor.
