“You started with first, implying there was a second.”

“Oh, right.” I emerge from my stupor. “I’m sorry you had to get in a fight last night because of me.”

His eyebrows draw down. “Make no mistake about it, that was all them, not you. They were disrespectful and should’ve backed off when you told them to.”

I nod in agreement. “I guess I’m notthatsorry because I still think it was superhot watching you defend my honor.”

He laughs and shakes his head.

“I blame the muscles.”

Before he responds, I hear my brother’s voice behind him. “There you guys are.”

We both stiffen and Chase’s eyes widen, looking at me in surprise and concern. He turns and steps aside so I can see Miles, showered and changed.

“What are you guys doing?” He looks between us with a small frown.

“Chase found me wandering and was going to show me the way to the locker room. It doesn’t matter how many times I’m here; this place is like a maze.” I walk past Chase to my brother and give him a hug. “Great game.”

“Thanks, sis.”

“Is Heather here?” I ask, changing the subject.

“No, she couldn’t make it.” I don’t sense much disappointment on his end.

“That’s too bad. I’m assuming we’re going for dinner since you guys won?”

Miles looks over me at Chase. “Yeah, you coming, man?”

I force myself not to turn and look at Chase, but I wait for his answer with bated breath. It would be easier to pretend if he weren’t there, but I want to spend all the time I can with him.

“Yeah, I’ll be there,” he says.

“Great. Sis, you can ride with me. Just let me grab my bag from the locker room.”

I nod.

“I gotta get my stuff too,” Chase says.

Miles is already off, heading back toward the locker room, and Chase’s and my eyes catch as he passes me. There’s no mistaking the guilt in his expression that I’m sure matches my own.

Dinner is a long, torturous affair because I end up at the opposite end of the table from Twyla, stuck across from Violet and Brady, who just want to talk wedding plans and kiss.

I’m happy for them both, but I don’t give two shits whether her dress is white, off-white, ivory, or blush. I mean, isn’t it all basically the same anyway?

Maybe it’s better that I’m not close to Twyla when Miles is around anyway. I felt like the biggest douchebag back at the arena when he stumbled upon us. Things would be a hell of a lot easier if I wasn’t attracted to his little sister, but as it is, the woman has a choke hold on me. The number of times I’ve glanced down the table at Twyla and imagined throwing her over my shoulder again, finding some closet, and rutting into her like a bull isn’t great.

I cut into my steak when Brady leans over and speaks in a low voice, “So what’s the deal with you two?”

I manage to keep my composure, bringing the piece of meat to my mouth and not even glancing at him. “What are you talking about?”

“C’mon, man. You’ve looked down the table a hundred times tonight. I know what it’s like when you’re into someone so bad you can’t take your eyes off them. Does she know you’re into her?”

I turn my head, glancing across the table to make sure Violet isn’t listening. She’s talking to Bryce about something that happened at Theo’s school this week.
