He grumbles something as I make my way out of the room, shutting the door behind me.

The bell rings again and another knock sounds as I turn into the foyer. “Coming.”

I take a quick peek out of the peephole on my tiptoes and mouth a soundless “Shit” when I see my brother standing there.

I whip the door open. “Miles, how did you get in the building?” I pull the top of my robe closed tighter as he walks past me into the condo.

“The concierge recognized me. Knows I’m here for Chase sometimes and that you’ve been living in the building.” He turns to face me. “What’s up? You just getting in the shower or something?”

“Uh… yeah. Exactly.”

“Cool. I’ll hang out until you’re done.” He walks into the living room and plops down on the couch, arms spread out behind him on the back of the couch.

“All right, but what are you doing here?”

That question sets off some type of brotherly radar because his head cocks to the side and he slowly gives me a once-over. “Thought I’d swing by and see if you wanted to hang out. Go get something to eat or whatever. Would have called, but I forgot my phone at home when I left to do errands.”

I suck in a slow breath, attempting to relax my shoulders. “Oh, okay. Sure, just let me get ready real quick.”

“I thought you were going to shower?”

“Yeah, that’s what I mean. Just let me have a really quick shower.” I smile. “Do you want me to get you something to drink while you wait?”

“Don’t suppose you have any protein drinks?”

I shake my head.

“All right, just a water then.” He leans forward and grabs the remote for the TV off the coffee table while I head to the kitchen, wanting to get this over with so we can get out of there as fast as possible.

When I return to the living room, the TV is on, but Miles gives me a strange look. “Is someone else here? I thought I heard something down the hall.”

I stiffen and shake my head. “Just the owner’s cat.”

His forehead wrinkles and he accepts the glass of water.

“I’ll hurry and then we can leave.”

“Yeah, okay.” He turns his attention back to the TV.

I take off down the hall, trying not to appear as though I’m rushing when really, I feel like there’s a poker an inch from my ass.

The moment I open the door to the master suite, Kiwi rushes out down the hall. Chase is standing there with his hands on his head, looking more stressed than I’ve ever seen him.

I quickly close the door and whisper, “What’s with the look?”

“The damn cat went in the garbage and took out one of the condoms. I was chasing it around in here, trying to get the damn thing out of its mouth.”

My eyes widen as adrenaline shoots through my system. “Oh my god, Miles is out there.” I turn and rush down the hall, calling the cat’s name. “Kiwi, come here, sweetie.”

As soon as I reach the end of the hall though, I see my brother standing in front of the couch, staring at Kiwi. She’s on the opposite side of the table, batting around the condom on the floor.

California could slide off into the ocean right now and it still wouldn’t be enough to save me from my mortification.

“Is that what I think it is?” Miles says.

With a sigh and sagging shoulders, I step farther into the room. “It is.”

Miles does an exaggerated full-body shiver as though it’s the grossest thing he’s ever seen, which… fair. I’d be the same had it been his condom.
