“Why didn’t you tell me you were seeing someone? Is he here?”

I put my hands on my hips. “I think it’s pretty obvious why I didn’t tell you. You would’ve grilled me about him, and I didn’t want to deal with that. I didn’t want the pressure of having to figure out what it all means because, let’s be honest, that’s what you’d demand to know.”

He frowns. “You know I worry about you. Especially after—”

I raise my hand. “I know. Especially after Mathew, but look…” I raise my arms out at my sides. “I’m still here. It didn’t break me.”

“Is this your way of telling me I’m overprotective?” He arches an eyebrow.

“Just a bit.” I give him a small smile.

He pulls me into a hug. “I’m sorry, sis. I just want the best for you. I’ll try to back off.”

I relax into his embrace. “Thank you, I’d appreciate that.”

He pulls away and looks down at me, hands on my shoulders. “So who is this mystery man?”

I shake my head. “Nope. Once I figure out what is going on with us, then maybe I’ll tell you.”

He frowns, not liking my answer. But he must really be trying because he doesn’t voice his displeasure. “Fair enough. Well, I think I’m going to skip that meal I suggested. I think I’ve lost my appetite after that.” He nods behind him to where Kiwi is still messing around with the condom.

I chuckle, embarrassed still. “Next time, maybe call first.”

He laughs. “Oh, believe me, I will not be showing up here again without an invitation.”

He turns to leave, and I notice it at the same time as he does—a jacket that’s half out, half under the side of the couch.

A jacket that only players of the San Francisco Kingsmen were issued. I know because my brother has an identical one.

I must have missed it when I was cleaning up our clothing.

Miles’s eyes meet mine in disbelief. Before I can even open my mouth, he’s stalking down the hallway toward the master suite.

“Miles, wait!” I call after him, but he’s already at the door.

He whips it open, and his back stiffens. Chase stands in the middle of the room wearing just his underwear, looking shocked and a whole lot guilty. Miles steps inside and punches Chase in the face. My hands fly up to my mouth and I gasp.

Chase’s face whips to the side, and when he straightens, he puts his finger in the air. “Consider that a freebie. Another one and it’s game on.”

I rush between them, my back to Chase while I push on Miles’s chest. “Stop it!”

My brother doesn’t even acknowledge me, and I can’t budge him. I might as well be a feather between two boulders.

“My fucking sister?” my brother shouts. “You’re supposed to be my friend. I asked you to look out for her and you take that to mean sleep with her?”

“Miles, back up.” I push him again, and this time he relents, faltering back a couple of steps.

“I didn’t want you to find out like this,” Chase says, and although there’s fury in his voice from being punched, the predominant tone is guilt.

Miles jabs his pointer finger at the air. “I can just imagine. I’ll bet you didn’t ever want me to find out that you’re fucking my little sister.”

“Miles, calm down.” I remain in front of Chase. Both men are pissed, but I know that neither of them would put me in harm’s way.

“How long has this been going on?” my brother asks, then pushes both hands through the curls on top of his head. “Never mind, I don’t even want to know. I have to get out of here.” He spins around and leaves the bedroom.

I let him go. Now is obviously not the time to try to have a level-headed conversation about this.

After the door to the condo closes, I mutter, “I’ll go get you some ice for your face.”
