Page 37 of It Has To Be You

Her heart seized. His words, their sincerity, the way her body wanted to react, were all too much.

The air was thick with confession. His and hers.

“That’s what I want.” The words were barely a whisper.

“I want that for you too,” he said, pulling Indy’s hand into his again. “Even if… even if it’s Nick. If you’re sure about him.”

“No, but I’m not unsure about him either.”

“I don’t know what to do with that, Indy.”

“That makes two of us.”

He nodded, eyes down. “Okay.”

Okay.

Nick returned from his trip.

Indy hadn’t even meant to check, but there it was when she opened the app— an update. It was a simple photo of his breakfast, and if she hadn’t sat in that restaurant and drunk that coffee half a dozen times or more recently, she wouldn’t have thought twice.

But she had.

And now she didn’t know what to do.

The answer still hadn’t come to her that night when Ethan messaged. Guilt sat uncomfortably on her shoulders, locked tightly around her ribcage. Did he know?

Ethan:How do you feel about Greek food? Specifically souvlaki. There’s a great place next to my building, and I’ve got a craving. I’m just about to leave school, so I can pick you up on the way.

Indy checked the time. He’d stayed lateagain.

He picked up on the second ring. “Hey.”

A single word shouldn’t have had such a strong effect on her, but in the privacy of her mind, Indy could admit she’d missed his voice.

“I have a very important question.”

“Lay it on me.”

“How good is their saganaki?”

His chuckle rumbled through her, settling between her thighs.

“You’ll like it. Trust me,” he said, a door creaking and then an influx of street noise. “How did your writing go today?”

“The blank screen is taunting me.”

“All right, give me ten. Let’s see if we can’t kick-start your imagination.”

She thought she was ready for the bike. What a joke. As if anything could have prepared her.

Especially when they reached a red light and Ethan lowered a hand to her bare knee and rubbed his thumb in circles for a solid ten seconds before the light changed. Her skin was still tingling when they parked at his building twenty minutes later.
